My all-time favorite. Maddy (the draped beagle) arrived as a completely shut-down rescue. Harry was her security spaniel. She would wait till he sat down and then sit on him to be sure he couldn't get away. When she was with Harry, she was utterly relaxed, as seen here. And Harry was very patient.
A black Field Spaniel reclines on a pink chair with a stuffed hedgie. A very ample beagle sits on him and drapes her front legs over the side of the chair, resting her head on a radiator in a way that can't possibly be comfortable.

Having recently attended a 4-hour "AI Essentials for Parents" session at AFT's National Academy for AI Instruction, I can confirm! It began with "how to make informed choices" and ended with a 1-hr tutorial for your child to use ChatGPT/Copilot/Claude as a "study buddy and thought partner". 🤨

area cat lets go of all the worldly concerns when faced with the first woodfire of the season
A fluffy tuxedo cat lies flopped on its side on a colorful patterned rug, eyes closed in bliss with paws curled up and one white hind leg stretched out behind. A wood stove burns brightly in the background, flanked by stacked firewood racks and windows looking out on evergreens. A wand toy with yellow and green pom-poms rests on the rug just out of reach.

More than any higher ed development in recent memory, institutional subsidies for AI at R1 universities prove that austerity is a choice. It is not “too expensive” to invest in a humanities research infrastructure; rather, it is a choice that R1 universities make not to & subsidize AI instead.

“we have chosen to cut services for heavy users because, bitch, you had it worse before the plague that very briefly brought people together & improved access to many things for everyone—so don’t complain, it could be worse” is absolute fucking bullshit.
A pandemic response lasting six years
When the COVID-19 pandemic closed libraries and disrupted access to scholarship, JSTOR increased the free reading limit from six articles every 30 days to 100, helping people continue their research. We kept the higher limit in place long after widespread library closures ended.
During that time, we learned more about how people use the program. Approximately 98% of active free-reading users access 10 or fewer articles in a 30-day period. Setting the limit at 10 preserves the current experience for the great majority of readers while remaining above the program's pre-pandemic limit. Readers who are already in the middle of a 30-day reading period on September 1 will retain the 100-article limit until that period ends. The new limit will begin with their next 30-day period.
