Angered by Google's exponential energy consumption (due to its AI pivot) and its plan to build "a pipeline of future users" via K–12 classroom software (due to its greed), a large crowd protested at its NYC office yesterday, organized by @climatefamsnyc.bsky.social & @aimoratoriumnyc.bsky.social
Protesters outside the entrance to Google's office on 8th Avenue in Manhattan. One protester shouts through a megaphone while others hold a banner saying "Keep AI out of our schools! Stand up for kids, not AI billionaires."

The defining lesson of this first year of Trump authoritarianism is that kowtowing & capitulating yields zero permanent benefit and only emboldens the admin to come after you more. This critical lesson was first documented in the landmark political science treatise “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.”

In this short piece, I lean on embodied cog sci to argue that we should refuse & resist llms in education (pp. 53-58) unesdoc.unesco.org/in/documentV... "the classroom is an environment where love, trust, empathy, care & humility are fostered & mutually cultivated through dialogical interactions"
But what iseducation? Embodied and enactive cognitive sciences remind us that knowledge is not something discrete that an individual possesses and passes down but an inherently dynamic and evolving endeavour that develops in the process of embodied, curious and engaged interaction through dialogue. The pinnacle of cognition, particularly ‘human knowing’, is inextricably interwoven with interactions we engage in with each other and the physical, cultural and social world we inhabit, ‘so much so that individuals are not thinkable outside of their interactions and embeddedness in their (social) world’ (De Jaegher, 2019). Dialogic models of knowledge and education emphasize that interactions between a student and teacher and/or peer provide ‘scaffolding’ for how that child understands the world. The always in flux, active and continually transforming nature of human cognition necessitates that education be fundamentally an ongoing activity. Far from the reductionist view whereby ‘formal knowledge’ can be packaged and acquired from an LLM, the classroom is an environment where love, trust, empathy, care and humility are fostered and mutually cultivated through dialogical interactions

Justice Jackson taking on Gorsuch's "pure textualism" and arguing for a more holistic reading of Congress' handiwork—worth reading in full. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...
The majority’s contention that I reject “ ‘pure textualism’ [a]s insufficiently pliable to secure the result [I] seek,” ante, at 10, stems from an
unfortunate misunderstanding of the judicial role. Our interpretative
task is not to seek our own desired results (whatever they may be). And,
indeed, it is precisely because of this solemn duty that, in my view, it is
imperative that we interpret statutes consistent with all relevant indicia
of what Congress wanted, as best we can ascertain its intent. A methodology that includes consideration of Congress’s aims does exactly that—
and no more. By contrast, pure textualism’s refusal to try to understand
the text of a statute in the larger context of what Congress sought to
achieve turns the interpretive task into a potent weapon for advancing
judicial policy preferences. By “finding” answers in ambiguous text, and
not bothering to consider whether those answers align with other sources
of statutory meaning, pure textualists can easily disguise their own preferences as “textual” inevitabilities. So, really, far from being “insufficiently pliable,” I think pure textualism is incessantly malleable—that’s
its primary problem—and, indeed, it is certainly somehow always flexible enough to secure the majority’s desired outcome.

NEWS ANALYSIS
Fair or Not, Zelensky Is Angering Trump. Is His Style Hurting Ukraine?
Through three years of wartime leadership, Ukraines president has mostly played weak hands wisely. But his approach has fallen fat with the Trump administration. It is hotly debated in Ukraine whether Mr.
Zelensky erred in his messaging by responding to insults from Mr. Trump with a few snipes of his own, rather than diplomatically navigating the U.S. president's attacks. Though Mr. Trump's claim that Ukraine started the war with Russia was clearly false, Mr. Zelensky infuriated him by publicly correcting the record and claiming the American president was trapped in a "web of disinformation" peddled by the Kremlin.
Was his response a necessary defense of national interests? Or a misstep in dealing with an empowered leader who broaches no criticism and essentially holds Ukraine's fate in his hands?Over the past two weeks, Mr. Zelensky has declined to sign the minerals deal and said he would not accept any outcome of Mr.
Trump's negotiations if Ukraine were not represented. He also has been pursuing diplomatic efforts to shore up European support.
But even backers in Ukraine of this diplomatic strategy say Mr. Zelensky's showmanship is an issue.
Rather than once laying out Ukraine's position, Mr. Zelensky reiterated at a security conference in Munich, a news conference in Turkey's capital and two news conferences in Kyiv that he would reject Mr. Trump's negotiations if they exclude Ukraine.
