I know how people listen to music. Special devices called "speakers" vibrate the air around them producing patterns of motion in the air called "sound waves". Those sound waves propagate to the person's ear drum which then sends a signal to the brain that is interpreted as "music".

Everyone is getting on Sony for this obviously anti-consumer patent, but it is actually a really good thing they filed for this. Just think, if Sony owns this idea then it will be more expensive and more difficult for other companies to do something like this.

In grad school I had an advisor/collaborator who refused to use gmail because he thought Google would steal his ideas and that his research in cryptography would lead him to having problems traveling to Russia if those emails got leaked. Oh, how he must be laughing right now.

I love this. It puts words to so much stuff I've had to deal with at my work recently. Lots of misplaced effort (and yes panic) about what recent developments in cybersecurity actually mean for us.

Fun TTRPG Puzzle whenever your players need to infiltrate a secret underground organization: have the cultists, thieves, gangsters, etc. test them with seemingly nonsense phrases. Later, let them uncover a scrap of paper from someone on the inside with The Magpie Poem on it.

The two things that can end the existence of a ghost are: 1. Learning enough about it to gain power over it (true name, unfinished business, etc) 2. Forgetting everything about it so it fades into nothing Successful hauntings need to balance these two opposite dangers.

This is what I've been saying. There is this cool bit of tech that should be opening up vast areas of creativity and dramatically simplify the workloads of lots of people, but business demands that it be sold as "employees will be a thing of the past".

Tom Nichols here is taking a "no representation without taxation" stance... a solid stance if you are someone who has never read the Constitution or thought about the concept of natural rights for more than a few minutes. The best time to delete this was immediately, the second best time is now.

When I would teach about graph theory I'd use the NYC subway map as an example. This would inevitably result in the realization that Queens and Brooklyn are rather disconnected by train. Then my math lesson becomes a history lesson.

Is everyone aware of the General Motors streetcar conspiracy? In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.

Thrift stores and yard sales are still a great place to get games, they have not been hit by the bloodsuckers that have come for books, boardgames and other collectables (mtg, pokemon, Warhammer). But no one beats libraries. A lot of them have pretty decent video game collections.

The understanding of authoring TTRPGs to leave parts incomplete thus inviting the process of filling in those gaps with the emergent story that arises as a result of playing the game, is specifically why LLMs and GenAI are so bad for TTRPGs.
