Higher Education in the UK is a bin fire placed carefully in the midst of a shitshow, which itself is lost on the barren burning wastes of managerial stupidity and government neglect. On the other hand, the first years are lovely. Really lovely.

This is utterly idiotic. We don't know what skills future workforces will need. We do know that will change & that students perform best if they study something they're actually interested in. And for the pig-ignorant in the back row, fewer than 50% of STEM graduates ever go into STEM employment.

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

Last minute check of the Friday emails, and there's one from Routledge. My book's coming out on the 7th October 2026 It'll be available in hardback and paperback, and, ok, I know this is a shallow thing to say, and a lot of work went into it, but I like the cover. I really do like the cover.
The front cover of my book Theatrical Performance and Popular Music. It's a large silver statue, designed by Es Devlin, and used on The Weeknd's After Hours Til Dawn tour.
