Headlines: Such-and-such technology may someday be as smart as human brains! Reminder: *We already have human brains.* Billions of them. Most of them living in poverty and being exploited for the obscene benefit of a tiny number of the worst people in the world.

A comic strip titled The Amazing World of Tomorrow.
A food delivery robot cooler drives down a sidewalk.
It crashes into a rental scooter.
It backs up.
It crashes into the rental scooter again. The scooter wobbles.
The scooter falls to the ground as the food delivery robot backs up again.
A driverless taxi crashes into both the scooter and the food delivery robot sending them flying.

Be careful with the Chatbots or you will give yourself a #slowbotomy
dictionary entry for "slowbotomy
/slōˈbä·tə·mē/
noun · 4 syllables
Etymology
Blend of slow (Old English slāw, sluggish, dull) + lobotomy (Greek lobos, lobe + tomē, a cutting); after the neurosurgical procedure held to diminish higher cognitive function. First attested c. 2023.

Definitions
01
The gradual atrophy of reasoning, critical thinking, and intellectual independence resulting from habitual delegation of cognitive tasks to a large language model or similar artificial intelligence system.

Three months after adopting the chatbot for his writing, he noticed the slowbotomy had set in — forming an original argument now felt like lifting something heavy.

02
By extension: any process by which the outsourcing of mental effort produces a measurable reduction in the capacity to perform that effort independently; cognitive disuse atrophy mediated by technological convenience.

The committee worried that mandatory AI-assisted grading represented a kind of institutional slowbotomy, eroding teachers' own judgment over time.

03
Informal, often humorous: the subjective experience of mental fogginess or diminished acuity noticed upon attempting unassisted thought after a period of heavy AI reliance.

She closed the laptop, tried to draft the paragraph herself, and felt the full weight of the slowbotomy she'd been cheerfully administering to herself all year.'
