One of my “grand theories” revolves around how “abnormal salience” is a challenge for contemporary life. Cannabis accentuates the phenomena (for comedic, enlightening, and tragic effects) but…the Internet and search and LLMs and the structures that humans have created with/out cannabis do it too.

This letter is exquisite. No notes
'The world's richest nation has always been penniless
The United States does not mint pennies. Pennies are minted by countries that once belonged to the British Commonwealth. The United States mints cents. The erroneous term "penny' was used throughout the Feb. 13 Econo- my & Business article "What would happen if the U.S. stops making pennies, except for a quote of the U.S.Code - which mentioned "one-cent coins." During the Colonial period, Americans handled pennies because the 13 colonies belonged to the British crown. After the United States became independent and began to mint its own coins in 1792, Americans unfortunately continued to refer to the cent as a penny. So, for the past 233 years, we have not changed. Old habits are hard to break! Joseph Scafetta Jr., Falls Church

here is the thing about the “argument” that democrats should have run roughshod over the law when they had the chance: it is much easier to break the law to destroy a program than break the law to create one.

i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.

my armchair psychological diagnosis is that the drive to accumulate as much wealth as possible eats away at the drive for self-improvement or the internal desire to cultivate any skills or tastes. these people build huge mounds of treasure and then essentially just sit around looking at it, empty.

Same reason he’s going after generative AI: he is totally out of hyper-growth ideas to carry Meta any further once the digital ad industry begins to contract www.wheresyoured.at/rotcombubble/
The tech, however, was never there. Mark Zuckerberg sold everybody on the concept of a Ready Player One-esque metaverse. Putting aside the fact that Ready Player One is a poorly-written dystopia, this vision hinges heavily on the idea of technology that completely immerses the user, allowing them to exist in a digital world that feels real. The reality was far worse — nausea-inducing headsets that led you into a clunky, cartoonish world that was neither fun nor practical, and tens of billions of dollars of R&D costs developing headsets that lose money on every sale.

Zuckerberg's glossy metaverse video — published at the same time Facebook rebranded to Meta, and was significant insofar as it was a demonstration of the company’s future ambitions and direction — showed exactly what he hoped he could build, and had he done so I'd argue it might have been a success, But said success would be predicated on a pace of innovation that we've not had in over a decade. Forty billion dollars later, the metaverse is no closer to existing, yet Zuckerberg keeps burning cash in the hopes that he can get just one more hit of hyper-growth. That's all he needs, man.

That's why Zuckerberg is so full-force on generative AI, shoving it into every Meta platform regardless of whether it does anything useful or says extremely strange things, like pretending it’s a parent of a gifted child and recommending schools to other (actual) parents. It's the same reason that Sundar Pichai and Liz Reid are forcing generative AI into Google Search even as it actively misinforms their customers, recommending people introduce glue and rocks to their diet, claiming former U.S. President Barack Obama is a muslim, and regurgitating stories from satirical news outlet The Onion as indisputable fact.
