Apparently this is topical this morning www.insidehook.com/culture/worl...
Of all your characters, whom do you most identify with?
Parker, from Alien. He decided to give his life up for the woman. He's totally a hero. He never blinked once. He knew he wasn't going to make it off the ship and he knew he was going to protect Lambert, and that's what he did. He was more of a hero than Sonny Boy Mosby, who was a different kind of an angry hero; the act of killing the Caucasian male in The Liberation of L.B. Jones had never been done before in Hollywood. The only thing we got close to was a slap from Sidney Poitier in In the Heat of the Night. But the next year, Willie Wyler said, "You're going to be the first black man to strike back violently."
That role psychologically impressed me, but he was not the hero-he was the antihero.
But Parker is a hero, completely. TIl never forget that character. He was ready to die.

Ultimately, we're hoping to add a few hundred new paid subscribers. That will let us complete the current cycle of pay increases, including a bump to 15 cents/word for fiction. Our target is October, but it is not the end. We'll be working on this until the pay rates are where they should be.

If you've followed my work for this long, you know that the value I place on productivity is a bit different from most people's. To me, being productive and efficient is a means to an end: more time to live your life, be with your loved ones, and achieve your dreams. Not as a means to just process more work, more of the deluge of responsibilities that hustle culture and our up-and-to-the-right obsessed society forces on all of us. But that doesn't mean that being unable to produce hurts any less. So when you're feeling stuck or lost, it still sucks, even if you know how pointless some of it might actually be.

This is live now for Patreon subs, and going out for free to all subs on Friday. Inside, I'm talking about framing - and also dissecting a story as an example that also exposes something I care little for:
To add any actual context, any detail on how politics impacts real people and real communities, to explain to the reader how the actions, opinions, and policy positions of their leaders translate into real-world impact on the ground, would potentially risk characterizing those policies as “good” or “bad” in a way that many media outlets simply can’t allow themselves to do, especially when it comes to state-sanctioned actions or the effects of decisions by institutional power.

Pilots and especially astronauts are trained to "work the problem." Even, perhaps especially, if the situation seems truly hopeless. Because the only sure way to lose is to not even try. Cynical pessimism and despair are very seductive traps. Been there myself. But they paralyse you. And others.

Sometimes we should just listen.

UX researcher here 👋🏻 Yes, this will be quite bad. Most of the critical things you need to uncover about your target customer is latent needs and behaviors. The kind of stuff that doesn’t exist in the training data fed into models. That’s why synthetic users produced by AI are garbage.
