A bookcase in a bookstore, showing several shelves of nonfiction books. Most are shelved spine-out, a few are faced to show the cover. Most prominent among them is Data Empire: The Power of Information to Organize, Control, and Dominate by Roopika Risam (published 2026)

Apparently this is topical this morning www.insidehook.com/culture/worl...
Of all your characters, whom do you most identify with?
Parker, from Alien. He decided to give his life up for the woman. He's totally a hero. He never blinked once. He knew he wasn't going to make it off the ship and he knew he was going to protect Lambert, and that's what he did. He was more of a hero than Sonny Boy Mosby, who was a different kind of an angry hero; the act of killing the Caucasian male in The Liberation of L.B. Jones had never been done before in Hollywood. The only thing we got close to was a slap from Sidney Poitier in In the Heat of the Night. But the next year, Willie Wyler said, "You're going to be the first black man to strike back violently."
That role psychologically impressed me, but he was not the hero-he was the antihero.
But Parker is a hero, completely. TIl never forget that character. He was ready to die.

The last word is “Stemm” - I don’t even know what to say. Luckily Woodstock from Peanuts has seen it all.
Screenshot of the final sentence in the article under discussion. The last word (“Stemm” - S t e m m) appears to be a misspelling of STEM, the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The final frame from a Peanuts comic, showing Woodstock the yellow bird typing a letter that Snoopy dictated. Snoopy has left. A caption at the top of the image, where in earlier panels typed words from the letter have appeared, here reads “Dictated but not read.”

Ultimately, we're hoping to add a few hundred new paid subscribers. That will let us complete the current cycle of pay increases, including a bump to 15 cents/word for fiction. Our target is October, but it is not the end. We'll be working on this until the pay rates are where they should be.

ICYMI: This went out to all subscribers on Friday - i'm getting over my own creative block by writing about how to get over creative blocks. buttondown.com/alanhenry/ar...
If you've followed my work for this long, you know that the value I place on productivity is a bit different from most people's. To me, being productive and efficient is a means to an end: more time to live your life, be with your loved ones, and achieve your dreams. Not as a means to just process more work, more of the deluge of responsibilities that hustle culture and our up-and-to-the-right obsessed society forces on all of us. But that doesn't mean that being unable to produce hurts any less. So when you're feeling stuck or lost, it still sucks, even if you know how pointless some of it might actually be.

a little solid-black puppy rides in a shopping cart in a pet store, but she’s not looking at any of the excitement around her. she’s looking straight at you, her eyes wide and ears dropped low, with her front two paws hooked over the shopping cart’s handle. she looks like a very sad little bat, and we’d give her the world if she asked.
