‼️Surveillance in the UK reaches a new level as the government plans to enforce PASSPORT ID checks on social media. 😡 What happened to anonymity & a free, open web? Worryingly, this is a growing trend, which must be stopped. 💪 More: tuta.com/blog/age-ver...
Big Brother Watch’s Maya Thomas Comments on the UK government’s plans to enforce passport ID checks on social media: “This proposal would tie every social media account, including everything we post, comment or search for, to a government ID.”“It would spell the
death of whistleblower, dissident and similar anonymous accounts that enrich democracy, and severely widen the scope for invasive social media surveillance.”

The social media ban is coming. That means every adult having to show their ID to get online. Age verification puts privacy at risk. Curbs freedom of expression. And simply doesn't work to keep kids safe online. The government needs to change course. But the clock is ticking. Sign the petition ⬇️

Kemi Badenoch’s threat to strip Holyrood of powers shows what the Tories think of Scotland’s democracy. When people reject them their answer is to threaten the powers of the Parliament we elect. Russell Findlay needs to say whether he opposes this threat and what he intends to do about it.

RNIB installing a Breathing Space bench on Hillside Crescent
A Breathing Space bench will be installed on Hillside Crescent in an official unveiling ceremony on World Sight Day (8 October. The bench is supported by The Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) Scotland along with NHS24 and Breathing Space, and is one of more than 100 installed since 2018. The siting of a bench in this way is intended to provide somewhere welcoming to sit where anyone can pause, reflect or begin a conversation about how they are feeling. Research shows that people with sight loss in the UK are twice as likely to experience depression as others.

There are complex historical reasons for the alignment of the border (as is often the case), but the most amusing thing is that the tip of the headland there is called Punta Dúngeness (yes, named after the similar-looking point far away on the other side of the world in England).

Secure on-street cycle storage is vital for tenement-dwellers. Some of our residents have been on waiting lists for over 6 years. Provision in our area is very limited. We welcome the 20 new cycle hangars which will be installed in the next 2 years, but they will simply not be enough to meet demand.

Somewhat far-fetched claims about what people cd save on long journeys; in reality you’d use the good ScotRail (formerly SPT) rail network for those trips, but bus wd fill in the gaps. Anyone using both probably already has a multi-mode ZoneCard. But making public transport more affordable is good!

Good points made by the community council. Both planned tramline extensions wd be very useful, but if funding or other reasons necessitate doing only one at a time, the Granton line via the railway corridor (and properly designed to share with the cycleway) is surely the line to prioritise first.
