UHI Institute for Northern Studies welcomed Scottish Government Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Energy Stephen Gethins MSP to Orkney on Thursday 13 August. During the visit, the minister heard about the institute’s internationally significant research and teaching across areas including sustainable development, Scottish heritage and island studies. Professor Donna Heddle, Director of UHI Institute for Northern Studies, welcomed the minister alongside Dr Beth Mouat, UHI Dean of Research and Innovation; Professor Alex Sanmark and Professor Andrew Jennings from the institute; Ali Hepburn from UHI Orkney; and Inga Burton from Orkney Islands Council.

I have consistently made the case for Scotch Whisky to be exempt from US tariffs, and President Trump has committed to removing them. Now I’m in Kentucky to build on that progress, strengthen ties with the bourbon industry and back one of Scotland’s most iconic exports.

👀 Gone to Specsavers with our Dundee SNP candidates, Heather Anderson and Stephen Gethins. Scotland is the only part of the UK with free eye tests and the SNP will protect them. We will also invest in more treatment in the community and give people faster, easier access to the care they need.

Scotland is energy rich but our bills are among the highest in Europe. Labour’s alignment with Reform and the Tories over Brexit and other policies is having an impact. As independent European Ireland takes meaningful action the UK Government sits on its hands.
