New Origin Story on Section 28: the law which halted progress on gay rights and drove it into reverse. Nearly every moment in this story - the moral panic, the press hysteria, the bad actors, the political cowardice - resembles what is happening now to trans people.

I'll continue to believe SF as a whole can survive the nerd reich. Always good to cleanse the palate and go back to classics that remind me how expansive and hopeful sci-fi can be, without being mawkish or bombastic. Regular re-reads of Le Guin's Dispossessed plays that role for me.

I don't think Lucy Mangan watched all the way to the end of "The Great ADHD Myth?" before giving it her gushing 4* review. If she had she may have seen these just before the credits; it sure does look like the medication works.
2 Months after filming Mason continued to struggle at schooland after some poor exam results Shauna made the difficul decision to put him back on his medicationMason's schoolwork has improved he wants to come off his drugs again this summer

We wondered on @cosmicshambles.com podcast whether Professor Katya Rubin knew how her interview was going to be used , well, surprise surprise (remember this was the documentary that Channel 4 boasted was “science led”)
Expert reaction to the TV show 'The Great ADHD
Myth?'
*NEW COMMENT* Prof Katya Rubia, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London, said:
"My own contribution to this programme has been largely misrepresented as my comments were cherry-picked, truncated and presented out of context to make them fit into the programme's narrative that ADHD does not exist and there is no brain basis to the social construct.
The claim that ADHD is not a disorder of the brain
"It is true that with current technology (which might well change in the future) we cannot diagnose ADHD children based on a braindiagnose ADHD children based on a brain scan and the diagnosis is based on behavioural questionnaires and observations that are subjective. However, this does not mean that there are no neurobiological correlates to ADHD. There are differences in genetic, neurochemical, even immunological features and there is consistent evidence from three decades of neuroimaging research including my own for differences in brain structure and function as well as connectivity between children with and without ADHD. It is true that they are small at a group level, and that some children have no brain differences based on normative modelling studies.
However, part of the reason the differences between ADHD and non-ADHD brains are small at group level is because there is a large heterogeneity, with some children showing large brain differences and other milder cases showing very small differences, so this will bring the average down. There is also substantial evidence for a delay in normal brain maturation in children with ADHD.
Crucially, we need to take into account that the youngest and most severe cases with ADHD have never been scanned and if someone behaves very differently from the norm their brain will also function differently.

This is something the 'rising #ADHD diagnoses are just big pharma wanting to sell more meds' arguments seem reluctant to explain. If the whole thing is a huge complex plot to sell pills, why would those pills be so rare and hard to get? Like advertising a restaurant only accessible via jetpack

Found Mangan's Guardian review more shocking than the channel 4 Daily Mail "ADHD myth??" stuff, which is par for the course. The review is flippant, ignorant, incurious and utterly unscientific. First time I've thought I maybe need to stop reading that paper if this is what they consider journalism.

So your reviewer gave a four-star review to a "documentary" that featured a kid with ADHD being taken off his medication because his mom "didn't like" it. Would you give four stars to a program that featured taking a diabetic kid off insulin? Leave ADHD kids alone. What is wrong with you people?

No women aged 20-24 in England have died from cervical cancer for the first time, thanks to the HPV vaccine.
A landmark study funded by Cancer Research
UK shows the HPV vaccine is making cervical cancer increasingly preventable, with researchers highlighting a major milestone: between 2020 and 2024, no women aged 20-24 in England died from the disease.

This is how communities show up for each other. Do read this by Nicola Browne from Act Now👇
Highlighted text:

A group of literally hundreds of people has sprung into action, coordinating, donating, providing lifts for families to get somewhere safe for the night, bringing food to those who don’t want to leave the house, offering shelter, car seats, toys and arts supplies for children. Ordinary people from every background, community and colour are carrying out thousands of acts of care and repair, looking after people they do not know, and showing clearly that none of this is in their name.

Condemning riots isn't enough. We need policy action, including an immediate appraisal of X as a vehicle for coordinating far-right disorder. And we need political leadership, to challenge white nationalism as an idea, not to validate it daily and then complain when it turns violent.

We have recently clarified our penalties for this. If a submission contains incontrovertible evidence that the authors did not check the results of LLM generation, this means we can't trust anything in the paper. 3/

This distinction between research & writing tool is crucial, for journalism at least. That seems to me utterly intuitive and obvious. It's excessive to criticise its use in research, as long as it is carefully deployed, and barbaric to advocate its use in writing, no matter how it is deployed.
