If a deal was agreed it would need to be Toad face proofed so it couldn’t just be reversed after 2029. Either locked in for 50 years or an extortionate exit fee paid. The EU can’t keep having a member joining leaving depending on the colour of the government.

We are nurturing a near-exact copy of the Bronze Age Collapse: an interconnected "systems collapse" where multiple environmental, economic and social crises reinforced one another. - climate change - mega-droughts - famine erodes tax-base - natural disasters damage infrastructure …

There is actually no negotiation as you mean it. You apply, art 49, then there is an accession process, where UK aligns with the acquis communitaires. The negotiation myth is brought forward by this believing the UK will have opt outs to negotiate. 🙄

If Andy Burnham did put Rejoin in the 2028/2029 Labour manifesto, won, and then called a referendum in 2032-2034 with Labour campaigning for Rejoin, I'd put money on Rejoin losing [unless miraculously the exact same terms were offered as existed in 2016]. The Right would then revive. Sorry.

It’s quite galling seeing so many Labour MPs from Scotland frothing about Burnham’s ‘progressive defence of the union’. He did no such thing. His point was about social mobility and welfare, nothing to do with the union. The same MPs were cheerleaders for Starmer’s wishy-washy pish last year.

In Scotland, there is free personal care for all adults in need. This covers help with personal hygiene, continence, diet, mobility and simple treatments. The upper threshold for residential care is £35,000. In England, social care is fully means-tested and the upper capital limit is only £23,250.

Absolutely spot on. And don’t forget that the EU hears all these comments. Every suggestion that the U.K. needs a special deal, or that it will join in order to change the EU into what the UK wants, sets back yet further the chance that the EU will allow the U.K. to rejoin.

Maybe I’m not good at politics and maybe Labour are truly pro Europeans and know a smart way to get back in. But his speech has 2 red flags 🚩 for me: the first one is that he called the EU a “market”; secondly he said he is seeking “consensus” in the U.K. with regards to the new relationship.
