This happened because we stopped caring about people having basic needs. Housing is no longer considered shelter, it is considered an asset.

I believe this is part of why institutional DARVO occurs. Everyone benefits from not only ignoring the violence, but from silencing the victim. Victims are stripped off their personhood and reduced to threats that must be dealt with through any means.

Judith Herman has written some powerful words on this. People tend to see victims as the source of harm because they were unaware of the violence until the victim spoke up. A lot want to go back to the day before they knew—not a time before the violence ever happened.

My jaw dropped reading this. It's exactly what Uni of Newcastle staff suggested to me – a meeting over tea with my rapist to "talk it through". So do uni staff around the world see discussions over tea as appropriate solutions to sexual assault?

I find it concerning how restorative justice is being pushed as the solution to violence, particularly in the case of domestic or sexual violence. I've been jumped on for critiquing RJ, and highlighting it's potential misuses and harms, including in survivor spaces. It feels unsafe to now.

Universities are not safe for women or gender-diverse students or staff, full stop. Sexual harassment is ignored at best and endorsed at worst. Staff perpetrators have significant leverage over victims, whether their victim is a student or staff.

It's great to see Victoria introducing a bill to ban the use of NDAs against victims in workplace sexual harassment (SH) cases. But it's unclear whether this would cover cases of SH in education, too. It's so common, and it's vital to prevent universities and other institutions silencing victims.

It shouldn’t take bravery for survivors to come forward about sexual assault. It only takes bravery because the systems that are supposed to protect survivors betray them. In a more just world, it would be easy for survivors to come forward and we would all be waiting to hear and help them.

I gave a talk today and a very smart victim advocate put why mediation doesn’t work for sexual violence into a single sentence: Once a perpetrator knows the (very reasonable) thing a victim needs, he becomes obsessed with making sure she can’t have it.
