If it’s cloudy, the sun *should* still make an appearance near the horizon as it passes between the ‘concrete canyon’ on Wednesday and maybe Thursday. Weather permitting. Gotta check my math, but because Chicago’s E/W streets are about 1.1° south of due West you get an extra day (or so) of henge.

I have so many memories from 9/11, but one that always sticks with me was going out that night to get the special extra evening edition of the Chicago Tribune for my mom. I had to try a couple gas stations to find one they sold out so fast.

Hundreds of millions of birds were migrating over the region last night. And - I believe - their flocks were picked up on radar. Looks like a major flyaway began near the marshy wetlands and shore along the southern tip of Lake Michigan.

You guys...I happened to visit a family friend's condo this weekend and had a view *similar* to the one in this travel poster.

Two black modernist, Mies van de Rohe designed high-rise buildings frame a view of Lake Michigan, with turquoise water, a lakeside path, beachgoers, and cars visible below. Boats and jet skis traverse the water visible between the buildings on a gorgeous late-summer afternoon.

I saw this one recently, by William Lawson (1954), and now I want to collect all the 50s Chicago travel posters

Care of the magic of a stack of 20 images, the Chicago skyline stuns yet again, as seen from the Adler Planetarium. Fireworks are going off on both sides of the frame - the left care of one guy who was just holding up a tube and yolo'ing it, and on the right from cloud-to-cloud lightning that is obstructed by other clouds and appears instead as a white flash. There's a lot of long exposure going on here so many of the buildings are shining brightly off Lake Michigan in the foreground.
