Exciting news from the Center for Institutional Courage! They launched a DARVO database, which tracks peer-reviewed academic studies about the concept. DARVO is an acronym that describes the way perpetrators respond to confrontations about their violence: Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender.

Fear of Speaking Out at the University of Newcastle, Australia "I've got a terminal disease, so I can stick my neck out to protest what's happening. But anybody else at the university who has kids to take care of, who has a rent or mortgage to take care of, they're basically held over a barrel."

The university where teaching is tougher than having terminal cancer for this academic
The University of Newcastle has been found to be worst in class when it comes to staff wellbeing. Now, an academic with terminal cancer is speaking out about it because others fear they cannot.

A tragic birth, and death, in a tent – and still our poorest must pay
This happened because we stopped caring about people having basic needs. Housing is no longer considered shelter, it is considered an asset.

Yes! This is what a lecturer did to me after 7 months of sexually harassing me, when I'd already been raped at the uni by a student. It not only destroyed my mental health, education, & future career, but DARVO can make it harder for victims to even seek therapy. More awareness of DARVO is needed!

I believe this is part of why institutional DARVO occurs. Everyone benefits from not only ignoring the violence, but from silencing the victim. Victims are stripped off their personhood and reduced to threats that must be dealt with through any means.

Judith Herman has written some powerful words on this. People tend to see victims as the source of harm because they were unaware of the violence until the victim spoke up. A lot want to go back to the day before they knew—not a time before the violence ever happened.

That was disgusting. They treated the whole case as if it were a soap opera, not an awful crime that impacted actual people. It was every crime journalist, true crimer, criminologist, and what not came out of the woodwork for their 15 minutes of fame.

I fear that the concept of restorative justice is being misused to paint victims who make formal complaints, demand protective action, or report to the police, as problematic. As if we aren't the "good" victims who want to resolve things amicably.

Someone said that if I'd accepted staff's suggestion of a meeting with the perp, he might've seen it as an "olive branch" & stopped harassing me. Apparently, I was the problem for wanting action taken for my safety, & this made me a problem for the uni too. If I'd only offered an olive branch.

Dani @dani-kml.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
My jaw dropped reading this. It's exactly what Uni of Newcastle staff suggested to me – a meeting over tea with my rapist to "talk it through". So do uni staff around the world see discussions over tea as appropriate solutions to sexual assault?

Dani @dani-kml.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
Restorative justice may be appropriate in some contexts, but the uncritical promotion risks leaving victims open to harm.

Why can't we acknowledge that being asked – or in some cases, pressured – to face a perpetrator through any sort of RJ or mediation can trigger fear, distress, and other trauma responses? I had long-term nightmares, and still find the memory of the suggestion triggering.
120
Dani @dani-kml.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
Why can't we acknowledge that some perps will use it as a platform to further manipulate and control victims, or avoid genuine accountability? Or that institutions can use it to silence victims, and to avoid formal investigations or taking protective action? To sweep violence under the rug?
120
Dani @dani-kml.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
My case would never have been suitable for any type of restorative justice process – even ignoring my personal response – because of the nature of the perp. This applies in many SV/DV cases. Yet, I'm only really seeing RJ presented as a great, safe solution to violence & retraumatising systems.
120
Dani @dani-kml.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
It's a wholly inappropriate suggestion in such cases, and disregarded the risk the perp posed – he'd enjoyed drugging, raping, and harassing me. I felt violated & sick at the idea of being in a room with him & a staff member, where he could again exert power and control over me. Had nightmares.

Dani @dani-kml.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
I was harmed by an institution (university) pressuring me to have a meeting with my rapist as a solution to him raping & continuing to harass me on campus. I didn't comply, but the suggestion that such violence could be "talked through" & their refusal to take actual action was retraumatising.

Dani @dani-kml.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
I find it concerning how restorative justice is being pushed as the solution to violence, particularly in the case of domestic or sexual violence. I've been jumped on for critiquing RJ, and highlighting it's potential misuses and harms, including in survivor spaces. It feels unsafe to now.

I don't consume true crime either, unless it includes or is supported by the victim themselves. Crime isn't entertainment, but too many of these true crime podcasters, tiktokers, and etc treat it as such. It's disgusting a journalist was given her therapy records! The violation of that.

It’s just as wrong to tell victims of this to “get over it” as to say that to those who have been sexually assaulted. It’s another form of sexual violence, where men exert power over their victims and strip them of bodily autonomy. Brilliant article, I'm sorry this happened to you.

Same in Australia. I can't access bluesky DMs without scanning my face or supplying a credit card or ID. It's the same for every other social media site. I don't think bluesky was even included in the government under 16s ban, but I can't keep up with this rubbish that doesn't protect kids.
