I've said for a while that, rather than actually fight antisemitic stereotypes of Jews as rootless cosmopolitan urbanites, Israeli politics just imbibes them and redirects them against the Diaspora, but then this guy just comes right out and says it.

The problem with this framing is that they always define “right to exist” as “right to prioritize maintaining a Jewish voting majority above enfranchising everyone who lives in the governed territories.” Which gets you precisely into the policies in question.
from the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue: “I’ll debate Israel’s laws, its leaders, its policies. But I won’t debate whether it has the right to exist. That’s a stupid debate.”

Really enjoyed this piece, which implicitly suggests another good reason to support small and university presses as much as you can: many of them are the ones willing and ready to take chances on nonfiction books that big five publishers are more than ever too scared to take on.

We're going to keep learning this lesson until we die
“The C-suites at Big Five publishing companies have more in common with the C-suites at other major American companies than they do with the editors and publicists and translators who work for them,” says Dan Sinykin, author of Big Fiction: How Conglomeration Changed the Publishing Industry and American Literature. “They’re always looking for ways to maximize profit, and right now they’re trying to see what they can get away with before there’s a revolt.”
