I watched the christmas episode for the first time (somehow) and the way that the gifts they give each other are well meaning, but represent such a deep misunderstanding about each other that the gift is offensive? That's cinema, baby

Ghost_ @dalivelyghost.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

The way that they can only get along when they close themselves off and talk about media... wow.

Ghost_ @dalivelyghost.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

There's something deeply personal about how perfectly on cinema captures the essence of brotherhood and the constant friction that exists between siblings And something so deeply frightening that if my brother is Gregg Turkington, then I am Tim Heidecker

And anything that isn't locked by an item is (atleast to a newcomer) is locked by soul level

000

Ghost_ @dalivelyghost.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

What seperates dark souls from being a full metroidvania isn't that its locks don't require new abilities (there's more to define the genre than just that) its that its keys are "soft". But even metroid and castlevania have their sequence breaks

120

Ghost_ @dalivelyghost.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

like lost izalith needing the fire stoneplate ring, new londo ruins needing transient curses, the abyss requiring artorias' ring, tomb of the giants requiring a light source, etc.

200

Ghost_ @dalivelyghost.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

Oh it absolutely is true! The depths are locked by a key dropped by the capra demon, and blight town is locked by a key dropped by the gaping dragon, and several areas require specific gear or items to traverse

100

Ghost_ @dalivelyghost.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

I'm just shooting the shit, but isn't the utility of aquiring souls/new equipment in dark souls not the same as aquiring new abilities in metroid? They both open up new areas of exploration and grow your power as a player

100

Ghost_ @dalivelyghost.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

So, in your mind, the definition of a metroidvania is reliant on using abilities as keys more than it is on non-linear progression?

110

Ghost_ @dalivelyghost.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

Is there a meaningful difference in the utility of a key opening new areas of exploration vs an ability? In that moment they both serve the same purpose

Cheez-It Extra Toasty should be the default and the original recipe should be sold as Cheez-It Pure. also the back of the box should have poetry on it instead of an advertisement for Chees-It Grooves. nobody's buying that garbage let us read something beautiful. or gross. they have gross poems now
