So like I keep wanting to float the idea that there's a major unspoken current in American politics where like nine different things are coded versions of "people are angry that they can't control their kids/grandkids' thoughts and lives" but then here it seems to have broken out into being explicit

Three panel comic. Panel 1: on the set of the Jerry Springer show, a man sits in a chair. Jerry signals off-stage and says, “we have with us: your ancestor who crawled out of the ocean 375 million years ago!” Panel 2: the live studio audience is booing. Panel 3: security attempts to break up a fight between the man on stage, and his ancestor, a tiktaalik.

But as you say, I am not sure the problem is fixable. Once you decide to make Hearts of Iron, on those terms, you are left with nothing but bad choices. And someone was always going to make Hearts of Iron in some form.

Anyway, I would say the appeal of Kaiserreich specifically is that it gives the player a layer of fantasy between them and the ugly actualities of the era.

three key problem with HOI: 1.) Germany is the country that gets to do stuff. It’s the de facto “protagonist country” 2.) In order for it to reliably do stuff, it has to be cracked or the game ends in 1940 3.) Refusal to grasp with Nazi atrocities makes it implicitly endorse a clean Wehrmacht myth

Yeah, Germany is the country that does stuff, but also the devs can’t let the player do the stuff that historical Nazi Germany actually did. For, y’know, good reason.

Lots of people think Taylor Lorenz is paid off by social media but I think the relationship is closer to a Chaos cultist: she worships Phone, works tirelessly to spread the influence of Phone and weaken the veil between the real world and it’s domain, and in exchange she is given boons by it.

it's funny Cyberpunk 2020 predicted being the consequences of being online but thought we needed augmentations to get cyberpsychosis
In the 2000's, we call this cyberpsychosis;
a mental disease in which the addition of
cybernetics causes an 'already unstable
personality to fragment. At first, the victim
begins to relate more to machines than to
humans. Soon, he starts to ignore people, parents, friends, lovers. Eating, sleeping all become less important. Finally, human
interactions begin to irritate, culminating
in a terrifying rage that consumes the
victim entirely.

reading various accounts of AI psychosis and a) the people behind chatgpt 4 should be sued into oblivion, especially for reintroducing it, and b) even for less vulnerable people and non-sycophantic AI there is an enormous danger in AI presenting itself as a frictionless friend.

Last year, my team and I decided to run an experiment. We convened a couple of focus groups with Democrats who wanted the party to be more moderate, then a couple with Democrats who wanted the party to be more progressive. If I didn’t tell you which group was which, you would not be able to hear the difference by listening to them.

Here’s a sampling from the more moderate group. Brandon from Georgia lamented that Democrats don’t “fight fire with fire,” saying, “Republicans will take an issue even if it’s completely fake news, and they’ll just beat it down the hatches.” Karen from Pennsylvania said that Jeffries is a “great guy” but that he is “too weak,” and “I think he’s just got to be more forceful, and maybe even nasty.”

Now here are some of the Democrats who want the party to be more progressive. Jeffrey from Georgia: “I mean, the party just seems to me like it’s like a turtle that’s been turned on its back, you know. It’s just kind of flailing around hoping that it could, you know, somehow right itself.” Mary from Michigan said: “Them actually showing a spine would be a delightful change of pace. I have been calling my congresspeople every damn day telling them to not go along with the Cabinet approvals, to not rubber-stamp things just because you’re in the minority. They have not done a single thing.”

These voters didn’t speak in terms of wanting the party to be more to the left or more to the center. They all just wanted Democrats to be more aggressive.

Interfaces change. Since I deal with about 10-20 different apps per day at least one is being needy or making me wait.
