place where ai could actually be useful is detecting tax evasion and determining which audits would be most cost-effective but the billionaires tech lords will not advertise that because any such system would quickly discover the most efficient allocation of IRS resources is going after rich people

Many such cases

Russia (vs Ukraine) and the US (vs Iran) provided their strategic rivals with the cheapest possible way (in money and/or equipment) to degrade their capacity and geopolitical power. Unlike the US, China isn’t so stupid as to waste the opportunity.

The prior major holiday firewall precedent *in the US* has already been saturated by xmas (literally the day after thanksgiving) so Halloween (xmas for goths) should technically be allowed the day after Labor Day if not the 5th of July.

Look billionaires. None of y’all facing consequences is not long run sustainable. I’m pragmatic enough to realize seizing all y’all’s assets could cause issues. The clear compromise is some of y’all face consequences so best you get together to decide who that is and why it’s Elon Musk.

While generally I agree with this mode of analysis—if it’s global then it’s not US-specific—I’m not entirely convinced in this case. If the US is at a 10% risk of cratering under debt and mismanagement it seems like it could contaminate the entire global supply of purportedly “safe” assets.

My hot take is that there should be an uncomfortable amount of space between you and the shelves for this to happen
Picture of a grocery store aisle with two shadowy expressionist figures. One is standing next to the shelves or at least not past the center line of the aisle and probably knows at least what kind of item they want. They are labeled “normal”. They took public transit to the store. The other is standing past the center line looking over a broad selection of items. They probably don’t know what they want. They probably don’t even know why they’re looking for among all the colorful product design. Maybe it’s validating. Maybe it’s parasocial. They simply command a great deal of space. They are the FOV Lord. Their field of view takes up as much space as the SUV they drove alone to the store.

The increasing annoyance I have with software making the experience feel worse are its negative externalities on my attention. There’s always an update. There’s always a new pop-up. Interfaces change. Since I deal with about 10-20 different apps per day at least one is being needy or making me wait.

Fun fact: language, usage, and pronunciation changes are more often than not originated and propagated by women. And I have a hunch that complaining about them, while obviously small-c conservative, is indicative of sexism.

Whenever someone says there are always trade-offs you just need to understand that person is assuming they are at a local optimum and you should empathize. Tell them you’re there for them. Recommend therapy. There are other Pareto improvements in the sea. Things can get better.

One of my shining moments in college was not going to my linear algebra class all semester instead copying down the homework assignments through the window. I went into the final not knowing what Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization was but made it up based on the name and got it right. Final grade: B.

Astrophysicists really dropped the ball when they called a model of a possible new object discovered by the JWST a Black Hole Star and not a Black Hole Sun.
Screenshot of the Soundgarden music video for “black hole sun” with Chris Cornell and a guitar he is not currently playing in front of a blue screen replaced with clouds midway between their change from happy fluffy white clouds to ominous dark clouds.

at home with a post-surgery puppy so have had some time to update the models; there's more data for the 'core' unemployment rate (U3 minus the temporary layoffs that went haywire in the pandemic) and we're able to make this claim a bit more robust
dynamic information equilibrium model of the core unemployment rate (U3 without temporary layoffs) showing four equilibria: 1. the pre-pandemic equilibrium (dashed gray with no error band), 2. the pandemic shock equilibrium estimate (dashed gray, gray error band), 3. the post stimulus / re-opening shock equilibrium (dashed orange, orange error band), and 4. the estimated mini-recession shock equilibrium (blue dashed line with a cloud of monte carlo lines around it); equilibria 2 & 4 are almost identical; the points since january 2025 are in black and are rising above the error band / monte carlo band of 2 & 4, now passing the "recession detection threshold" of delta log u ~ 0.17.

No. The case against Cofnas is quite clear and strong. It is simply not a matter of academic freedom. He violated his employment terms. He violated university conduct. He is a crisis for the university's ability to function and public image. An academe that includes Cofnas is fundamentally broken.
