This weekend is The Urban Birding Festival and we'll be there! Here's where to find us. Our storefront will be open for normal shopping hours.
A half tone vintage map of Chicago's geology fills the background. Over top is a light blue text banner reading, "Skunk Cabbage Books at the Urban Birding Festival, Sept. 18 - 20". Inset is a photo of a white non-binary person wearing a mask and a Skunk Cabbage Books ballcap with a pigeon sitting on their shoulder at last year's Urban Birding Festival. A halftone map of Chicago's geology fills the background. A blue text bar with an inset photo of Dexter Patterson's Birds of the Great Lakes reads in black, "Friday: Bird Joy for All with Dexter Patterson." A second banner with an inset photo of the cover of Extremely Accurate Birds by Tommy Siegel reads in black, "Saturday: Extremely Accurate Bird Songs with Tommy Siegel and Billy Libby". A photo of a diorama at the Nature Museum of a taxidermied deer looking up at a fake oak tree. Blue text boxes read, "Saturday + Sunday: Fest HQ @ Notebaert Nature Museum. 10 am - 4 pm."

Librarians! Zine-Makers! This new Temporary Services zine (made with @doormouse12.bsky.social) is for you! We interviewed 4 public librarians that maintain zine collections and the result is a beautiful 44 page booklet. See and learn how they do it! $10.00 (or $3.00 PDF) from www.halfletterpress.com
From the front and back cover of the booklet:

Public Librarians Discuss Zine Collections

We asked librarians at four public libraries to talk about their library’s zine collection. What advice can they share with zine makers that want to get their work into a public library, or librarians that want to start a collection at their library? Was it hard to convince others that zines are a resource that the library should collect? What collecting models did they follow? How did they build the collection?

Interviewees:

Tim Devin / Somerville Public Library
 (Somerville, MA)
Angi Brzycki & Ziba Pérez /
Los Angeles Public Library
(Los Angeles, CA)
Alicia Tate / Multnomah County Library

it's not a self-help book, but it is pretty opinionated. The Politics of Lonely: Why is Friendship So Hard? is officially out today! bookshop.org/p/books/the-...
Three pieces of advice from The Politics of Lonely
(swipe to see one more that got cut from the finished book)
- “Each of us needs a lot of people, and we need them very badly.”
- “It is worth considering whether you might let your friendships inconvenience you a fraction as much as your job does.”
- “Kill the Margaret Thatcher in your head”

out today, 2026-09-10stated reason for not writing a self-help book: “I believe that the message that you can fix all your problems on an individual level implies that they’re your fault to begin with.”

actual reason for not writing a self-help book: i do not give good advice :)

screenshot from the book manuscript, where i have written "have sex with one of your friends! just kidding.... unless?", with a comment asking "too unhinged?" and my very patient editor replying "probably, haha!"
