how i answer that question in the book is that a lot of forces (austerity, white supremacy, the housing crisis, etc) are making our lives a struggle materially, while ALSO giving us "you don't owe anyone anything" brainworms right while we need each other most.

really enjoyed talking to @sesmith.lol at @theflytrapmedia.com for this piece on dismantling self-publishing stigma! although i am both a [very small] publisher and a traditionally published author, self-publishing is my first and main love and i will defend it to the death ⚔
Building Solidarity and Finding Family

That sense of creating opportunity was important for Lee Arden, who runs Sheer Spite Press, a Canadian small press that prints “useful, generous, personal, political, heart-filled” books and zines. “I started Sheer Spite Press in 2023 because I was looking at arts grants applications, and realized that self-published work does not count toward a lot of opportunities like grants and artist residencies,” they told The Flytrap. “I’d been informally helping people make and sell their zines for a long time, but I realized if I called that ‘running a small press,’ I could launder legitimacy for them and their work and help them access those types of opportunities. It worked almost immediately: The first author I published got a $25,000 grant to write her next book.”

“Other small publishers have been incredibly kind with advice, resources, mentorship, and pep talks,” Arden continued, which is a very different vibe from the world of traditional publishing. And Arden takes joy doing and experimenting, rather than thinking about bottom lines. “I am surrounded by people who make things for the joy of it, and to share with friends and use as a vehicle to meet new people,” they said. Arden’s strategy to help other writers reflects a larger rich culture in self-publishing, with indie authors building community on websites, Discords, group chats, and anywhere they can carve out space. Writing for and with each other, these spaces are not competitive and participants don’t see writing and success as zero-sum games.

Le Guin’s anarchism and why it’s so great.Adrienne Row-Smith (she/her) is a Queer Black visual specialist based in so-called Ottawa, working across photo and video to create bold, impactful imagery. Rooted in a deep commitment to authenticity and accessibility in media, she co-founded The Grove, which is an interdisciplinary art and community space offering affordable rentals and sliding-scale events. Through both her creative practice and community work, Adrienne aims to build a space and working body that reflects the elements of care, resistance, and belonging, where disenfranchised voices are not only heard but celebrated.Lee Arden is the author of The Politics of Lonely: Why Is Friendship So Hard?, a book that takes friendship out of an individualistic context and argues that we’re struggling with our friendships because we live in the decaying ruins of colonial capitalism. Lee also runs the small press and zine distro Sheer Spite Press and has written lots of zines, including PALS: The Radical Possibilities of Friendship, which formed the basis for this new book.

Librarians! Zine-Makers! This new Temporary Services zine (made with @doormouse12.bsky.social) is for you! We interviewed 4 public librarians that maintain zine collections and the result is a beautiful 44 page booklet. See and learn how they do it! $10.00 (or $3.00 PDF) from www.halfletterpress.com
From the front and back cover of the booklet:

Public Librarians Discuss Zine Collections

We asked librarians at four public libraries to talk about their library’s zine collection. What advice can they share with zine makers that want to get their work into a public library, or librarians that want to start a collection at their library? Was it hard to convince others that zines are a resource that the library should collect? What collecting models did they follow? How did they build the collection?

Interviewees:

Angi Brzycki & Ziba Pérez /
