I participated in some public library ai courses. I’m telling you that the state of literacies and the complexity of lives deeply enmeshed in the bowels of late stage capitalism cannot find a use case for an agent & if they could, people don’t have the scaffolding to imagine one that could be useful

I spend a lot of time on "Cool idea- without evidence and research you cannot make a historical/cultural argument based solely on what you see/interpret through your personal experience" when facilitating interaction with archives and it is a specifically concerning type of literacy crisis

Excited to announce that I've signed a contract with @mitpress.bsky.social for a new book! It's about ImageNet, a dataset of 14 million photos. Without it, we likely wouldn't have "AI" as we currently know it. I've been thinking about this book for over 5 years, and am excited to finally write it.

I *hate* this "digital divide" framing for AI; even libraries marshal it to justify their "AI literacy classes," ensuring all have "access" for self-actualization and economic opportunity. Maybe instead some folks are sufficiently literate, and they're instead choosing *principled refusal*.
