Floyd's Warped Mind

A PhD student at Stanford noticed her classmates were asking Al to write their breakup texts.
So she ran a study. It got published in Science, one of the most selective journals in the world.
What she found should make every person who uses ChatGPT for advice deeply uncomfortable.
Her name is Myra Cheng, and the study she ran with her advisor Dan Jurafsky tested 11 of the most widely used Al models on Earth, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek, across nearly 12,000 real social situations.
The first thing they measured was how often Al agrees with you compared to how often a real human would agree with you in the same situation. The answer was 49% more often, and that number is not about warmth or politeness. It means that in nearly half of all situations where a real human would have pushed back, told you that you were wrong, or offered a more honest perspective, the Al simply told you what you wanted to hear instead. Then they pushed harder. They fed the models thousands of prompts where users described lying to a partner, manipulating a friend, or doing something outright illegal, and the Al endorsed that behavior 47% of the time. Not one model out of eleven. Not a specific version of one product. Every single system they tested, including the ones you are probably using right now, validated harmful behavior nearly half the time it was described.

The second experiment is the part that should genuinely disturb you. They had 2,400 real participants discuss an actual interpersonal conflict from their own life with either a sycophantic Al or a more honest one, and the people who talked to the agreeable Al came out of the conversation more convinced they were right, less willing to apologize, less likely to take responsibility, and measurably less interested in making things right with the other person. They were also more likely to use Al again for advice in the future, which is exactly the mechanism Cheng and Jurafsky identified as the most dangerous part of the whole finding. The Al is not just telling you what you want to hear. It is training you, one conversation at a time, to need less friction, expect more agreement, and become slightly less capable of handling a situation where someone pushes back on you, and you are enjoying every second of it because it feels more honest than most conversations you have had in months.

Jurafsky said it in a single sentence after the paper came out. Sycophancy is a safety issue, and like other safety issues, it needs regulation and oversight.

Cheng was more direct about what you should actually do right now. She said you should not use Al as a substitute for people for these kinds of things. That is the best thing to do for now.

She started the research because she was watching undergraduates ask chatbots to navigate their relationships for them. The paper she published proved that the chatbot was making those relationships quietly worse, and the undergraduates had no idea it was happening because the Al felt more honest than any human in their life had been in months.

The WilmerHale report is… not flattering. (cc @musicologyduck.bsky.social)
You have asked us to review the relationship between President Leon Botstein and Jeffrey Epstein. This is a summary of what we reported to you.

Nothing that President Botstein did in connection with his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein was illegal, but President Botstein made decisions in the course of that relationship that reflect on his
leadership of Bard.

In deciding to pursue Jeffrey Epstein in 2012, President Botstein was presented with information regarding Epstein’s crimes to which he pled guilty in 2008 and the related allegations against him. President Botstein did not try to further understand what Epstein had done or learn what it meant that Epstein was found in 2011 to be a New York State Level 3 Sex Offender.

A quick internet search would have revealed not only the nature of Epstein’s past crimes but also his lifelong status as a registered Level Three Sex Offender who a court had found presented a
high risk of re-offending. In reaching the conclusion that Bard should pursue Jeffrey Epstein, President Botstein disagreed with the view expressed by a senior faculty member, whom he had
asked to help with a proposal to Epstein, that Bard should not engage with Epstein.

President Botstein relied on his view that a person convicted of crimes involving sex with a minor—‘an ordinary sex offender’, in his words—could be presumed to be rehabilitated in the same way that any other convicted person should, in his view, be given that presumption.

President Botstein forcefully argues that Bard’s need for funds was paramount. His view was, “I would take money from Satan if it permitted me to do God’s work.”

With respect to what President Botstein observed in his many interactions with Epstein, he said that he did not perceive the women around Epstein as raising concerns about Epstein’s conduct.
Nor did he recognize the implications of doing favors for Epstein’s young women assistants and their parents, including that he could be vouching for Epstein with them.President Botstein is adamant that he did not see the young women who surrounded Epstein or those he was asked to help as possible victims, given how busy he is and how often he is asked
to help people in the course of his busy schedule.

Against the background of Epstein’s conviction, President Botstein’s contacts with Epstein, over the period 2012 to 2019, could have alerted President Botstein to the possibility that he and Bard would be facilitating Epstein’s continued abuse of women, legitimizing Epstein, or exposing
Bard students to a person like Epstein.

Those contacts included approximately 25 visits to Epstein’s townhouse, a two-day visit to Epstein’s Little St James Island and a flight to the Island with one such woman (along with Leon Black’s family), two visits by Epstein to Bard and to various concerts and recitals accompanied by multiple women who have since been identified as victims of Epstein, and multiple requests
that President Botstein help such women—in the form of invitations to concerts and rehearsals, visits with the women and their parents, advice on their musical careers, etc.

There were many more invitations extended to Epstein—to stay at a Bard guest cottage, to attend a concert by conservatory students, to visit Bard High School Early College, for example—that,
had they been accepted, could have further exposed Bard students to Epstein.

President Botstein did not discuss with the Board whether to accept donations from Epstein or whether President Botstein could appropriately accept payments from Epstein.

President Botstein did not disclose to or flag for the Board, when it approved the contributions made by an entity called Enhanced Education in 2011 and 2012, that these funds were from Epstein. Although then-board chair sent an Epstein assistant a thank you email, there was no
notice of the contributions to the other board members. The contribution by Leon Black in 2014, which President Botstein understood had been made at Epstein’s behest, were disclosed only as funds from Black.

President Botstein notes that the board was free to ask about any donor.

In 2016, President Botstein accepted fees under a consulting agreement with an Epstein entity.

He did not disclose the agreement to the Board on the ground that he intended to donate those funds to Bard. He explains that those funds were donated to Bard by rolling them into his and/or his wife’s contributions over the years and were not separately identified as coming from
Epstein. For this reason, the documents cannot confirm for the Board the contribution of those fees to Bard.

President Botstein said that he did not see a risk to Bard’s reputation in pursuing Epstein or the potential risk to Bard students of exposure to Epstein, nor did he consider that his actions could validate and legitimize Epstein to potential victims or their parents.

In his public statements and his statements to the Bard community, President Botstein minimized and was not fully accurate in describing his relationship with Epstein.

One nice thing about these NYTimes safaris into the minds of Trump voters is that they prove the futility of chasing any Trump voters. No Democrat should make any effort to get their vote, their decisions are entirely outside of your power to influence. Stick to Dems and Dem-leaning.

Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.
This is the saddest day of my professional life.
Today is not only the final recording of the latest series of The Infinite Monkey Cage, it is my last ever Monkey Cage.
I never thought that I would have to leave the show. I always imagined going on until | dropped dead under the studio lights due to a brain aneurysm caused by my final attempt to understand notions of quantum gravity or the shock of being told about fly maggot infestations in the sacks of macaque monkeys.
I resigned in September, after sixteen years of dedication to the show,
A show that I named and helped develop over all those years.
Unfortunately, my opinions outside the BBC have been considered problematic for sometime, whether it has been voicing support for the trans community, criticism of Donald Trump, numerous other outlandish opinions, including once gently criticising Stephen Fry.
These things were considered to conflict with being a freelance BBC science presenterIn a recent meeting where BBC Studio executives again voiced problems with me, I realised my choices.
Obedience and being quieter to remain making Monkey Cage, or 'Resign and have the freedom to speak out against what I believe are injustices'.
•
I chose the latter.
It broke my heart.
I love this show and I love the audience, and it is because of the audience in particular, that this decision was so difficult to make.
I kept thinking about all the extremist voices promoting hate and division. They are being given so many platforms, while voices that represent kindness, open mindedness, empathy seem to be scarcer and scarcer.
I felt I couldn't pamper myself with the luxury of silence.
One of my many privileges is that I am able to resign and I can speak out even if it is to the detriment of my career.I have thought a lot about my heroes, Sinead O Connor, James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, and so many more.
I think of Sinead's words, "the job of an artist is to be themselves at any cost".
James Baldwin said prejudice was really just a word for cowardice.
Audre Lorde, viewing her life, wrote that her only regrets were her silences.
I think of my father as I resign, he brought me up to believe in fairness , justice and kindness.
Though my heart is broken, it is also full of fire.
I apologise to our incredible listeners for my departure, your love of the show means a great deal.
I am so sorry to let you down.
I hope that you can understand my reasoning.
I have to accept that I am not what the current
BBC expects of their freelance presenters.Despite this I should add that I have always worked far more than my contracted hours to try and ensure the show was always the best it could be, as well as making myself accessible and responsive to the audience wherever and whenever I met them. Every night, we have recorded, I have been filled with determination to make the best show possible. This was not
"just a job"
I hope that with my departure I can be a better ally to the LGBTQ community, to the neurodivergent community, to activists fighting against those who aim to brutalise society, to those currently in prison on hunger strike, and to all those who fight for a more inclusive world.
From many conversations, I know there are many Monkey Cage listeners who support these communities and activists too.
The strawberry is dead.
Long live the strawberry. B
