An important corollary to the Surf Dracula tweet that I think should be talked about more, now that we're basically inundated with these types of shows, is that most of them don't get renewed, but even the ones that are don't turn into the weekly adventures of Surf Dracula in the second season.

The resulting coarsening of elite conservative discourse is notable. Twenty years ago, it would have been a scandal if a major defense contractor and Republican donor publicly endorsed the retrograde opinions on gender relations offered by “@cumlasagna1.” Yet Elon Musk’s embrace of “@cumlasagna1” did not even make the headlines on December 15, 2025 as the primary political story of the day was President Trump appearing to take credit for inspiring the assassination of Princess Bride director Rob Reiner and Reiner’s wife due to their liberal activism. (The president’s conclusions may have been premature. Reiner’s son-in-law would later be charged with the crime and police state they believe a personal dispute rather than political disagreement was the primary motive.) All of this has clear implications for who gets to be an expert and how expertise gets to be legitimated in conservative national security discourse. Given his agreement with a profane Garfield themed far-right social media account’s stance on the cognitive capabilities of women, it is unlikely that all else being equal, a female spacepower strategist or aerospace engineer would have her suggestions taken as seriously as one of her male counterparts by the influential Republican defense contractor.
