I went for a wander round the 4 acre garden and found a box of VHS tapes marked ‘For the next one’. I’m sure it’s fine. I’m sure it’s all fine

One for you Postcode nerds I know are out there. A 1969 Post Office advert detailing Hull's postcodes & how they worked. After trials in Norwich from 1959 a national system came in 1965; the advert was a bit previous stating 1971 as it was three years later the job was done. ↘️ flic.kr/p/2szdg5a
By 1971 everyone will have letters after their name : advert for Postcodes : The Post Office : in : Telephones : brochure : Kingston upon Hull Telephone Department : Hull : [1969] : A brochure issued in 1969 by the then municipally owned telephone service of Kingston upon Hull Corporation. It gives details as to the history of the Department, famously the 'one' that was not acquired by the nationally controlled system of the GPO, its services, the exchanges and a technical section on how the telephone and exchange system operated.

The city was, and still is, famous for its cream telephone kiosks in contrast to the once standard red kiosks seen on British streets. Sadly the service was sold off by the City Council in 2007 and what had become Kingston Communications is now simply owned by an off-shore group.

This advert, slightly amusingly, was issued by the Post Office - the successor to the GPO whose national telephone monopoly did not include Hull. It shows the move towards the UK's national Postcode system by way of an explanation of how postcodes worked using an example in Hull; HU5 2HW and HU5 2HH being opposite side of Manvers Street. It shows the whole HU area, then the inner city followed by the street in diagrams.

The GPO had decided upon the requirement for UK postal codes in the late 1950s to assist in the mechanisation of sorting. The first trials were in Norwich in 1959 and in 1965 it was decided to extend the system to the whole of the UK. The first town to see the standardised system was Croydon in 1967 and by 1974 the whole of the UK had been postcoded; the last was Norwich where the original trial system was replaced by the standard system in that year.

Sine then postcodes have become valuable data tools in their own right and used not just for letter sorting but also for a wide range of other uses including statistical analysis.
