#Dogwood1 #Wipwnips because the book is up for preorders 🥰
Owen set Frankenstein aside and tried to rub some feeling back into his ankle. His foot tingled unpleasantly in his shoe. Though he never heard Wesley turn, he could feel those keen eyes on him, could remember the impatience shadowed by something almost like desire. What is the nature of your injury? Freak.
“It’s old,” Owen said now, on that narrow strip of grass between the student center and the cornfield. “It happened a long time ago.”
“You were a child,” Wesley said, having evidently run the math of an old wound on a young man. “And the wolf who stole you…”
“She didn’t steal me. She saved me.” Nervous hands wrapped a bootlace around his ankle and pulled it tight.
      “Saved you for what?”
Owen started. “What do you mean?”
“For what purpose is your guardian saving you?”

Just nine months ago we weren't sure if I'd make it. In that sickness, I feared I'd completely lost the writing spark. Well, I lived. And this new thing I'm working on is over 70,000 words. I love these characters and I can't wait for their next mistakes.
The stats for a Scrivener document, including that the document is currently 71,265 words long.

This is part of what I'm referring to with many people demanding stories that reassure them they're a good person. They want the moral instruction because otherwise, rather than processing the reading experience, there's a thrum of "am I bad? am I bad? what if someone finds out I'm bad?"
Tumblr post by graftini:

stories about abuse are allowed to exist without reducing themselves to moral instruction. i think sometimes when people complain about the “romanticization” of abuse, what they're actually objecting to isn't necessarily the way abuse is being represented, but the fact that the representation doesn't provide them with constant moral reassurance. like, there is a difference between “this story frames abuse as desirable or inherently romantic” and “this story depicts abuse in an erotic/ambiguous/complicated way and doesn't repeatedly tell me that abuse is bad, therefore the depiction itself is irresponsible.”

- sexy, wet Orpheic dreams
- Sapphic Austen continuation
- bitchy banter
-open door spice
- friends to lovers

A star-forming region. The left two thirds is blanketed in thick clouds of green and yellow gas and dust that form swirling patterns. Some of the gas is spread into thin, thread-like wisps. The right third shows a black background speckled with stars and multi-colored dots that are distant galaxies. Bright stars are scattered throughout the clouds, with the densest cluster situated in the center. Each is crowned with six long spikes and two shorter spikes created by the optics of the telescope’s mirrors. In the upper right, a couple of hidden stars blast out long, glowing jets of material that glow in blue.

For today's #WIPSnips, the backstory of the Vicomte de Tempname! Almost all of which is subject to change if I change my mind 😂 The most important thing is to give you a sense of what kind of guy this is.
They seemed to be endless, but o’er the many days he’d been stuck at Bertley Abbey when the downpours resumed and then had returned to check on Dragon, whom Alexander couldn’t bear to ride home in such muck, Alexander had yet to tire of them. In his fifty years, the vicomte seemed to have ventured every sort of venture there was: he had at eight saved Marie de Médicis by eating a sensitive letter, had at eighteen professed Catholicism at knifepoint in the dust-cloud of La Rochelle, had been five times imprisoned, had sixteen times fought in duels, had twice escaped assasination by the skin of his teeth, and had once held off a half-dozen highwaymen unarmed before joining them, losing two months to wine, and ultimately reforming the lot. He had fought alongside Turenne against the Habsburgs and then, in retrospect unwisely, thrown in with le Grand Condé during the Fronde; seven years in exile followed, five of which were spent on the other side of the Mediterranean, after he was captured off Barcelona by Barbary corsairs.

"Lustful erotic scenes go hand in hand with sword fights; love and hate are muddled-up, mixed-up terms that mean so much more than they do in our world. Having been born and raised in that gruesome world, it isn’t too big a surprise that Carys turned out the way she did: deliciously vile, sarcastic, and irresistibly rude. These are the final lines of a chapter towards the end of the book where Jayro and Anora, #AnnoyanceToLovers, are finally, finally realizing they might mean more to each other... as they dangle in the dark from a makeshift bridge on an icy alien planet. #WIPSnips CW: gambling reference
From Always Get In a Spaceship With a Scoundrel, a sci-fi romance by Ellie Rhymer
That look, more than blaster fire, more than a four hundred foot drop, more than dangling mid-air as wind screamed over the valley, made his blood run cold.
She was going to let go.
She was going to let go because she thought she was smarter than him, that it would save him.
“Anora,” he said. It was his turn to scold. “Don’t be such an ass.” There was a brief flicker of annoyance in her face. Good. Can’t argue with him from the bottom of the ravine.
“Don’t do that,” she said, teeth chattering.
“Do what?”
“That! Don’t try to make me mad.”
“Why not? It’s working.”
“Jay. I want you to listen. Whatever happens, this isn’t your fault.”
“No, you listen, Butterfly,” Jayro interrupted desperately, his arms trembling with the effort of holding them both up. “You’re trying to reason with me. The thing is, you just can’t reason with gamblers.”
The wind caught at them again and made the plank rock sickeningly.
“Sure, you can work out the odds,” he continued, trying to keep his voice even as he panted with exertion in the thin atmosphere, “you can do the math, and you can say the house always wins, but in the end, that’s not what gambling is about.”
“And just what is gambling about?”
“Getting lucky.”
And with that, a gust of wind roared through the ravine, picked up one end of the plank, and tipped them into the air.

Rare opportunity to post back-to-back, continuing snips! This bit comes right after the one I posted yesterday. Melody is trapped in conversation with a chatty stranger. 🪷 From my spec fic, ResortWIP. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #AmWriting #AmQuerying
“…and good lord, the flowers! I’ve never seen so many different kinds of lilies in my life, I swear. And the poppies! Never in my life have I seen poppies like these! Have you seen them? The color is just so delicate. I mean, I know ‘delicate’ describes constitution more than color, but you get my drift, don’t you? I mean, how many workers do you think they employ, just for the gardening, do you figure?” Daria squinted thoughtfully. “At least, what, a dozen, don’t you figure?”

Melody blinked at her—then realized that Daria had more than just stopped for breath and was actually awaiting her response. “At least,” she replied, smiling blandly and shuffling her feet.

She needed out. She no longer cared about devising an appropriate transition; it would simply have to be a hard cut instead of a fade. She could not carry on about the requisite workforce for the resort’s botanical upkeep any longer with this woman wearing a tank top that read SPIRITUAL GANGSTER, whose average words-per-minute had to rival even the most competent of court stenographers.

“Excuse me, I’m just gonna…” Melody lifted her glass to indicate she needed a top-off and began making her way back to the bar.

To her horror, Daria followed.

“I can’t imagine, I mean, I just can’t imagine all the work it takes. Have you been over to the big pool yet? Well, no wonder you can’t appreciate the topic fully, because my word. It is breathtaking. There’s a little garden island in the middle of the pool! It’s pristine, I tell you, just pristine. And on the end of the pool closest to the main building, they’ve got these trees—oh, gosh, what were they called again? I just asked one of the workers on my way over here, and now I’ve completely forgotten…”

That’s it, Melody decided. No matter what, she could not get a second drink. Even if she stayed she couldn’t get a second drink, because this conversation was surely going to kill her before she could.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky Kid-Aubergine (called Iom'ren here) just murdered a man and Shallot decided it was best to keep him safe rather than let him turn himself in or return home. Pic of Aubergine as a kid for reference, but this snippet is not as cozy as he is in the picture, lmao
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

Iom’ren, shivering in the wretched cold…
“I’m sorry,” he said before Shallot could interject. “I didn’t want to make things worse for you. I appreciate the kindness you’ve shown me, Madam, but I cannot allow myself to be caught by the authorities. I shall take my leave now.”
Shallot swung her arm toward him faster than she thought possible and grabbed his forearm.
“Nonsense. No one’s going to turn you in. And you’re not going back to wherever your sister is. I don’t know what your parents did to you or her, but you’re not going back.”
“Soup. They turned my brain into soup. And they killed her. They killed her just like I killed that man. It would only be right if I died now as payment for my sins. Then I can go to Spiritua and be with S’faira.”
“You’re not going anywhere. Your sister will get the help she needs from the Gods or shinigami, wherever her soul is. You must continue to live.”A young Aubergine from the Good Thyme Inn books. A dark-skinned teenage boy sitting at a tavern table while eating grilled sliced aubergines. He has wings for ears, jewels embedded in his face, and has a bit of a mischievous look on his face. One arm is propped on the back of the chair.
