In light of some magazines pulling scummy things on creators lately, I’m doing a little thread on short story rights. I don't want anybody getting taken advantage of. Also, if you're new, this stuff can be confusing!

After the joyful return of [friendshape!!! 🥹] and a glorious transformation, it's fun to be back in Bochir! Continuing to enjoy the payoffs, reappearances, and reprises, and one of my favorite characters appears this week, smoothly sapphic in a crisis~ also poor Zak is such a trouble magnet 😭

My voice embraces pretty much everything they tell you not to do 🤣 I picked my example para from 1661. Tell don't show, fourth wall break, sardonic swerve where true/false is flipped by the end of the long-ass sentence. In 1660 I avoided 2nd person but here I just went for it. #LitHodgepodge
You see, Young Mr. Aldridge, who had been educated in Amsterdam by the sort of philosopher who wrote in private of gelijkheid, who imagined himself devoted to the New Science, who longed someday to be recorded as the prophet of a better age to come, nevertheless had more than something of the seigneur in him, that took it as an insult that any knave should starve in his demesne. The expedition had been a failure: he was more restless now than when he’d begun.

Some folks I got to work with also worked on AMANDA! And this prompted me to rediscover that she got to become part of IceCube! Good for her 🥹 Amusingly, tho I had some kink adventures concurrent with my neutrino science, the crowds were very separate and I didn't encounter any AMANDA hole jokes 😅

AHHHH this is awesome! Many years back I got to contribute a teeny tiny bit to analysis of data from RICE, the predecessor to IceCube; seeking, in fact, ultrahigh energy neutrinos! (And in that case not finding any 😅) It's SO cool to see how far things have come since then 😍

I think a lot of people would want to read an existential gothic novella abt a late 30s lesbian vampire in a love triangle with two other lesbians that was written for fans of Carmilla and the Lady of the House of Love by a chalant goth. I have no doubt in my mind at all.

I managed to find rice in my Demon in a Bottle wip, about a demon trapper in a world where human industry runs on the power of bottled demons. Millie is planning her last foray into the hills before the stormy season hits. #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #DemonInABottle
Pavilion traffic ebbed and flowed with the tides of the day, but Millie paid it no mind. Shadows grew, stretching like grasping fingers across the ground as she split her attention between bites of flakey crust stuffed with spiced meat and columns of numbers scratched down in her battered notepad. She didn’t like the way things were stacking up. No matter how she shoved the digits around, Millie was staring at two weeks worth of rice and beans for every meal. It was that or dip into her meager Stormtide savings. As things currently stood, all she could afford was a bunk in a stormhouse. Sharing a tiny room with a handful of strangers for a ten week stretch was a special kind of torture.

Beans it is.

“Can I get your basket, Florita?”

“Hmm?” The tacaňo vendor’s dazzling smile pulled Millie out of her dark spiral, back into a world of light and color. He motioned to the empty wicker basket at her elbow. “Go ahead. You can take the tonic bottle, too.”

Still smiling, the young man bobbed his head and gathered Millie’s empties onto a tray with other castoffs. He’d clean everything and reuse it in a spirit of waste-not, want-not that Millie understood all too well.

“Better hustle if you’re wanting to gear up, Florita.” The vendor jerked his chin toward a shop window filled with empty bottles. Colored glass caught the slanting afternoon light and threw it back across the dusty boardwalk in a shimmering curtain of rainbows. “The bottle shop closes early on Tender-Day.”

“I can’t afford glass like that.” Millie’s words came out rough, edged with a decade of bitterness, but not even her sour attitude could dampen the young man’s spirits.

“Maybe someday, Florita.” He grinned and moved on to the next table.

#SundaySnips - Eerie Here's an eerie moment from The Bird and the Blade!
Then, in a moment that caused chills to spread across Callum’s entire body in a violent wave, everything went wrong. The birdsong died. The hair on the back of Callum’s neck and his arms lifted. Silently, he nocked an arrow and whistled, low and steady.
Judyth turned around, eyes wide. She motioned Wilder to keep talking. Wilder stumbled on a word as she drew two daggers and nodded to Callum. Wilder’s hands lifted to rest on the pommels of his short swords.
Judyth mouthed, What’s wrong?
Callum looked up, then back to her. He gestured to his ear. Where are the birds? he mouthed back.

Top Caption: Meet Elias and Inquisitor T. Sterling

Left Hand Image:
Commission of an llustration by Roan aka @faindriart.bsky.social (credit also at the bottom of the image)
Pictured are two trans men staring each other down. They look like they either want to kill each other or kiss each other.
The taller on the left (Elias) is a thin, pale man with pointed ears. He has long black hair with silver streaks and a green gradient on his forehead and cheeks.
The man on the right (Sterling) is a heavyset white man with dark, receding hair and sparse stubble.
Elias has a hand on Sterling's chest and is serving a glare that can kill. Sterling meanwhile is gripping Elias' other arm and glaring at him. His expression is a mix of disgusted and offended.

Righthand Text:
Inquisitor T. Sterling, the most prolific witch hunter in the world, vows to destroy all magic to prevent what happened to him from happening to anyone else:
A loss so horrific that led to him hiding his transness and assimilating to a hostile religion as means of preservation.

Elias' life is tied to an ancient, dying forest, with his fate being resigned to join it unless he can trust the witch hunter hired to kill him to help him save it.
Though trust does not come easy once a heart has been shattered and left to rot once before.

#Dogwood1 #Wipwnips because the book is up for preorders 🥰
Owen set Frankenstein aside and tried to rub some feeling back into his ankle. His foot tingled unpleasantly in his shoe. Though he never heard Wesley turn, he could feel those keen eyes on him, could remember the impatience shadowed by something almost like desire. What is the nature of your injury? Freak.
“It’s old,” Owen said now, on that narrow strip of grass between the student center and the cornfield. “It happened a long time ago.”
“You were a child,” Wesley said, having evidently run the math of an old wound on a young man. “And the wolf who stole you…”
“She didn’t steal me. She saved me.” Nervous hands wrapped a bootlace around his ankle and pulled it tight.
      “Saved you for what?”
Owen started. “What do you mean?”
“For what purpose is your guardian saving you?”

Just nine months ago we weren't sure if I'd make it. In that sickness, I feared I'd completely lost the writing spark. Well, I lived. And this new thing I'm working on is over 70,000 words. I love these characters and I can't wait for their next mistakes.
The stats for a Scrivener document, including that the document is currently 71,265 words long.

This is part of what I'm referring to with many people demanding stories that reassure them they're a good person. They want the moral instruction because otherwise, rather than processing the reading experience, there's a thrum of "am I bad? am I bad? what if someone finds out I'm bad?"
Tumblr post by graftini:

stories about abuse are allowed to exist without reducing themselves to moral instruction. i think sometimes when people complain about the “romanticization” of abuse, what they're actually objecting to isn't necessarily the way abuse is being represented, but the fact that the representation doesn't provide them with constant moral reassurance. like, there is a difference between “this story frames abuse as desirable or inherently romantic” and “this story depicts abuse in an erotic/ambiguous/complicated way and doesn't repeatedly tell me that abuse is bad, therefore the depiction itself is irresponsible.”
