Good morning #writingcommunity and #poetry lovers 💙📚 Here’s a poem about hope. 🕯️ “Insha’Allah” by Danusha Laméris #poetrybrew
Insha’Allah

I don’t know when it slipped into my speech
that soft word meaning, “if God wills it.”
Insha’Allah I will see you next summer.
The baby will come in spring, insha’Allah.
Insha’Allah this year we will have enough rain.

So many plans I’ve laid have unraveled
easily as braids beneath my mother’s quick fingers.

Every language must have a word for this. A word
our grandmothers uttered under their breath
as they pinned the whites, soaked in lemon,
hung them to dry in the sun, or peeled potatoes,
dropping the discarded skins into a bowl.

Our sons will return next month, insha’Allah.
Insha’Allah this war will end, soon. Insha’Allah
the rice will be enough to last through winter.

How lightly we learn to hold hope,
as if it were an animal that could turn around
and bite your hand. And still we carry it
the way a mother would, carefully,
from one day to the next.

#GodsOfAtalantis Mireia's favorite place is any beach, but especially her favorite cove in her hometown of Habuuket. It's where she feels free & can forget about the world. For Kena, it's his garden. Caring for the plants gives him purpose, and he finds the process peaceful & meditative.

#AwesomeCharacters #GodsOfAtalantis: I'd say Mireia & Kena are both a complicated mix of sometimes accurate, sometimes not... Mireia is bold, blunt, stubborn & attractive, and she knows it - not in a conceited way but an honest way. She'll be self-deprecating sometimes about her bluntness, but 🧵

My answer for #AwesomeCharacters funny I think?? Alexander is vastly arrogant, believing himself immensely skilled and beautiful and the main character of the universe. Unfortunately he really is skilled and beautiful and he really is the main character in a trope-bound storyworld. 😂

I have a heck of a lot of "turn" in just 3.5 chapters of 1661 already, but I decided to offer one that has the sense of transformation over time for #SundaySnips! This is Alexander's first meeting with his Destined Horse™️, who btw has a taste for flesh. They are perfect for each other.
His first impression was that this Mistral wouldn’t pass for Pegasus by any means. Alexander’s eye had been taught to see beauty in the arched neck and muscular shoulders of a Spanish horse above all others’ and in a Friesian’s second. Here, whale-eyed and tossing his head, was a homely little pony of fourteen hands, almost mulish in aspect, with a Roman nose, square body, and skinny legs. He had been born bay with three white feet, but at just shy of four had nearly finished turning dappled-grey, giving him in April the colour of a rose rolled in the dirt.

#Septopolis 27 I've kinda answered this in previous posts, but Julius has a whole militia that works for him. They act as the main law enforcement & also defense force for Capria. Within that militia, he has his trusted inner circle who have a lot more power, as long as they stay in his favor.🧵

This is one of my favorite Kena scenes. I haven't posted it in a while, and I was just thinking about it, so here ya go 😂 From GODS OF ATALANTIS Book 3. Sunshine Boys are hot 😎 Book 1 now available in paperback! bookshop.org/p/books/the-...
Kena dodged the attack, moving like lightning, and landed a hit on the side of Toctha’s head that sent him stumbling sideways. Mireia, who had of course trained right alongside Kena and knew his fighting capabilities inside and out, was well aware that he could have knocked Toctha unconscious in an instant if he’d chosen to. She also knew that if Toctha had any idea that Kena was deliberately holding back, he would have been even more furious.
Shaking his head, Toctha turned back to Kena and resumed an aggressive fighting stance, bracing to attack again.
“Really? You’re that determined to fight?” Kena sighed, slipping into an almost lazy defensive stance. “I was hoping that blow might have discouraged you.”
“A lucky hit!” Toctha growled, shaking his head and blinking again, still clearly a bit disoriented. “I’ll have you know I was trained by Master Jakuufet himself!”
“Who?” asked Kena.
“Of the Adza Muul Fraternity,” Mireia explained, wondering how she’d managed to remember such a useless fact.
“Adza Muul?” Kena made a face. “Well, that explains a lot.”
Seeing that Kena was distracted, Toctha attempted to charge at him again. But Kena only dodged him once more, easily evading his wide swing and catching him from underneath. An instant later Toctha was on his back in the dirt, panting and groaning and wondering what on earth had just happened.
“You left yourself open, friend,” Kena said, helpfully. “I understand, it’s easy to do. You wouldn’t believe how many times that’s happened to me.”

#PretendPanel Sept 26th Goodbye, September! Earlier this month, I finally debuted the print version of my YA fantasy novel THE GODS OF ATALANTIS (part 1). Buy it here! bookshop.org/p/books/the-... I'm so proud of this stupid thing, I still can't believe it exists. Now... to finish parts 2 and 3! 😅
Cover of THE GODS OF ATALANTIS, designed by me. The bottom half shows a girl with long flowing hair sleeping in a fetal position, wrapped up in flowing cloths; she is painted in shades of light to dark blue, and her flowing hair and cloths are reminiscent of ocean waves. At the top, upside down, a boy with curly hair and a tattoo on his arm is also sleeping in a fetal position, wrapped up in cloths; he is painted in golds and reds, like the sun. The two of them mirror each other almost like yin & yang, with the title written between them in shining reddish-gold letters. A reddish-gold border frames the cover, and each corner features a small symbol: a marigold flower, a phoenix, an orange & blue striped fish, and a wolf. Along the left and right sides of the border, pale bluish-white crystals are growing. Along the bottom the author's name EMILY KLOTZ is written in the same reddish-gold letters.

Happy Bisexual Visibility Day #AwesomeCharacters ~ My MC Alexander is bi! Though in 1660 (age 15), he thinks he's "normal". Like everyone likes both girls and boys the same way he does, right? Only in 1661 does he learn the concept of sexual orientation. 😅
Drawings of characters from a 17th century swashbuckling adventure above a bisexual pride flag colored background.

Alexander Aldridge is a small blond fopling in a fancy blue doublet and petticoat breeches, with pink and silver ribbons, red-heeled shoes, and a broad-brimmed black hat with ostrich and blue and white peasant feathers.

Elizabeth Hartweald is a short lady with her auburn hair up in ringlets wearing pink and white and carrying a fan.

Thomas Hunt is a brown-haired, moderately tall young man in slightly less fancy blue clothes than Alexander, though still elaborate, with silver ribbons and blue and white ostrich feathers in his hat.

Jonathan Feathers is a tall foppish gentleman in a black cloak, blue doublet, and red petticoat breeches with red ribbons, wearing bucket-top boots, gloves, a Venetian bauta mask, and carrying a pistol.

There's also a small chibi head of Lucette, a chestnut-haired lady wearing an orange dress.

A colorful drawing of Xa'aba, aka "Claude Frollo meets Regina George," sometimes referred to as Colonizer Karen. She's a beautiful woman in her early forties wearing multicolored priestess robes, large earrings with feathers, and a large golden headdress. She is smiling smugly and probably judging you while plotting to persecute some heretics.

Crude comic showing chibi heads of Lady Aldridge (a 17th century lady in her 40s with blond hair in ringlets) saying to Lord Aldridge (a 17th century nobleman in his 50s with graying blond hair wearing a wide-brimmed black hat).

The speech bubble has the famous dialogue of Mrs. Bennet from the opening of Pride & Prejudice, with words blacked out and handwritten over to say: "My dear Lord Aldridge, have you heard that visitors have come to Bertley at last?"Crude comic continues. Mrs. Bennet/Lady Aldridge continues telling her husband:

"Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs. Plumtree says that Bertley Abbey is visited by an old man of Protestant religion from the south of France; that he came up in February in a new Continental coach to stay with his son-in-law."Crude comic continues. Mr. Bennet/Lord Aldridge replies to his wife:

"I see no occasion to visit. Why would I ever leave the house? As for Alexander, we had better not send him by himself, as it is much too dangerous for our delicate little boy."Crude comic continues. Alexander, a foppish 17th century boy with a cute babyface and long blond hair, with an ostentatious blue ostrich feather in his hat, says:

"How can it affect me?"

While lurking at the borders, a foppish Occitan nobleman and his daughter, both with coiling chestnut hair, eye him like the eyes emoji.
