I don't have a word match for #LGBTQWriteAThon but I do have vibes!! When I looked at the month overview I was first like "man, how am I gonna match all the spooky themed prompts?", having apparently forgotten that the majority of my book is set at a creepy old abbey with all the gothic tropes… 😂

Bertley Abbey, unlike Aldridge House, sat in the bottom of a valley like a brick in a pillow, though like Aldridge House, it was also covered in the handprints of Henrician times, when it had been turned from the support of hundreds to the pleasure of a single family. Its stones had been moved plenty, just not uphill; the church had been decapitated, the leads sold, and the rest of it jumbled around by a century of improvers, each seeming to have a different idea of domestic comfort. Irrational, confused, ugly—various adjectives volunteered by Alexander’s mind—but there was also something ominous, something that raised the hairs on his nape, about the ancient skeleton still exposed: ghosts here were visible that at Risenden were not, and he, proud child of a more rational age, couldn’t quite ignore their warning.

Kinda heavy excerpt #WIPSnips today… wasn't sure about it but it's not explicit. CN slavery, surgery, torture, Islamophobia. This is a monologue of M. le Vicomte de Tempname's from 1661 ch4. He's a complicated character, simultaneously forward-thinking and old-fashioned with some huge blind spots.

“From life’s banquet of I have sampled much, and now at its close I attest there is no taste sweeter than that of freedom, and none more bitter than that of bondage. I have had broken bones and a stone forceps’d from my bladder, and I would suffer any physical torture over such humiliation again. Of all evils invented by man or Devil, I know none more insulting to human dignity than slavery; to abrogate man’s ownership of himself and the very concept of consent is a crueller injury than any delivered by chain or whip to the body afterwards, for it is the excision of his rational soul, the anima given by God. But let me not sicken the company with tales of what the Muslim sees meet to do to the infidel in the galley or the bagnio; I should rejoice instead to be arrived on this island where not only my body but my conscience can be free!”
