Once the sword passed by her, Ashrah sprang forward, darting Datusha across the soldier’s torso and following with a—

The earth shook; she lost her balance and her sword, and then the soldier slammed into her, pressing the hilt of the greatsword against her neck. Ashrah strained against the weight crushing the bones along her throat, the taste of alarun biting her tongue.

Unable to aim, she rammed her fist against the general direction of the gash she had opened in the mortal’s stomach. The soldier squealed, arms going weak. Ashrah punched the injury again with more force and, wriggling her arm free, threw a fist at her enemy’s throat, causing her to drop the heavy weapon as she backed away, struggling for breath.

Ignoring the ache in her neck, Ashrah retrieved Datusha, plunged it into the warrior’s gaping mouth, and dragged the blade out through bones and sinew and flesh. Slivers of teeth and bones and the sliced tongue jumped out of the hanging mandible, the two halves writhing on the floor alongside a chunk of her still-beating heart.

The moon had yet to rise, so the dirt road leading back into the heart of the town was almost too dark to see. He could have summoned a torch, but given all that had happened today, he felt it prudent to remain shrouded in darkness, so instead he relied on his divine senses to lead him. There weren’t any lanterns or fireplaces burning behind the windows of the houses he passed; if not for the fact that he could hear the heartbeats of the remaining inhabitants, he might have thought the town was abandoned. Instead, everyone seemed to be hiding. Which was just as well, since he wasn’t sure he could stave off the persistent hunger if he did see anyone.

And his divine senses detected black magic lurking nearby. He summoned a pistol to his left hand, just in case.

When he reached the dramshop, he was surprised to see a light burning in the dining room. Cautiously he pushed the door open with his free hand, covering the now open doorway with the muzzle of his revolver. It was unlikely that a shot from any gun could seriously injure him, but he still didn’t relish the memory of the stinging bite of the bullets when the priest shot him earlier in the day.

The person inside the dining room had no gun though. Instead, she sat at one of the tables, facing the doorway, a lantern sitting on the table. Before her, on a plate, rested a heart. She wore a dusty black sombrero-style felt hat over her wild black hair, and had wrapped a purple, black and white striped serape around her shoulders. Tiny gold bells dangled from rings piercing her cheeks on both sides. Mextli glared at her down the revolver’s sight. “Coyolxauhqui.” The hunger glazed his voice with a little growling edge.

I had only just placed my foot on the first stair when I felt a hand on my shoulder and a hard shove threw me off balance. I stumbled, throwing my arms up to cover my head as I rolled down the steps and slammed into the wall of the landing below, my arm resting on the fire extinguisher and the oxygen bottle at my feet.
It could have been worse, the landing was less than a dozen steps down, but this was still really going to hurt when those painkillers finished wearing off.
I groaned and looked up from the floor to see someone at the top of the steps, obscured by the smoke rapidly filling the stairwell.
“I thought I heard your voice, Rayna. What luck, running into you here.” The figure began descending the stairs.
“redacted.”
This was just perfect. I moved to push myself up off the floor to meet her.
“I wouldn’t do that, Rayna,” redacted chided. She smiled as she showed me the gun in her right hand, now carefully trained on me. “You might have a spinal injury. You should stay very still, after a fall like that.”

Drisal did not look up.

"Why?" Cerel demanded again. As his eyes adjusted, details came into focus. Rush was so still. Like a dead thing, the only sign of life his faint but labored breathing. His head rested on one upflung arm; his half-lidded, colorless eyes stared at nothing.
Absolute fatigue had carved Drisal's face into a mask of sharp shadows and deep caverns. He smelled of festering wounds and the blood of the INJURED, which
had stiffened in his hair and ripened upon him as if he had not washed in days, a dying thing himself.

Cerel's anger welled up, staving off his emotions and saving him again. "Because it's your duty? Because you owe them?"

Pain coursed through Rowan, so intense it nearly knocked the breath from his lungs. He reeled, pressing his hand to Callix's chest to try to regain his balance, but the world was tilted, swirling. He was on a sinking ship, quickly approaching the waves that would pull him under. “Don't,” he hissed, and before he knew it, he was on his back instead, Callix's thighs bracketing his hips as he pinned Rowan's hands above his head, and there was a searing pain in his wrist that he didn't recognize.

“You fucking burned me!” he yelled, thrashing against the weight on top of him. He stared at the raw pink flesh, freshly blistered and oozing a little. The acrid smell filled his nose, nearly masking the scent of Callix's magic, which had been dizzying and pungent when the sun had been out. Now, it was barely noticeable, even as Callix held a flame in his free hand, flickering dangerously close to Rowan's face.

“You tried to stab me!” Callix yelled back. His grip on Rowan's hands was still firm, but his thumb was gentle as it brushed lightly over the injury. Still, the feel of it made Rowan flinch. “It's not as bad as it looks.” Callix's voice had softened too. He extinguished the flame in his hand, leaving them in near darkness. “I'm sure your healers have something that can clear it up really fast.”

I sit inside the admin office with Nico and Azura, waiting to
talk to the vice principal about what happened with Damien. The chairs are hard and plastic, and I'm feeling every bit of them as a physical discomfort to match my mental state.

What the hell just happened?

Nico's staring at his hands, like they're going to give him answers. The fact is, there's no way Nico has the strength to do anything to Damien. Sure, his glamoured form is bigger than Damien's glamoured form, but he's literally skin and bones minus the skin. No matter what muscle tone Damien's faking to look the part of quarterback, he's actually working out with the guys, throwing that ball, no matter how ineptly.

Or at least he was. With a broken wrist, he's not going to be
working out with the team any time soon. The only good news is that the season's over, and he'll have plenty of time to recover before his senior year. Still, it's never good for a player to sustain this kind of INJURY. He was screaming at us about losing possibilities for college.
