If Simon hadn’t been so desperate already, Hector really would bite him open, drink him half-dry and make him woozy and pliant. But Simon’s saucer-wide pupils and laser focus on the red pooling on Hector’s chin and seeping into his beard belie his composure. It’s not like Hector’s ever been turned—no doubt something out there could mold a vampire into something else, though he’d rather not dwell on the possibility—but he’s got the gist over the years, how it eats and eats and eats at someone if they don’t get what they need. Born vampires have it bad enough already; what exquisite agony something even worse must be, the basest parts of oneself parched and undeniable.

Darin then squeezed his hand, tilted his chin up. “You are my King. My only duty in this life is to serve you, to keep you safe. And I will do that with my dying breath. I will walk through fire for you. I will freeze to death just to keep you warm. I will sacrifice everything if it meant that you would come out of this unharmed.”

Sebastian’s lower lip wobbled. “I don’t want you to do that.”

He frowned. “Why?”

“I just want you to be my friend.” Sebastian choked on a whimper. “I don’t want a guard. I want my *friend.* I almost died. I’d only worn my crown for an *hour,* Darin! And I have no one in this world to turn to. I fear that not even my bride will offer me comfort. I feel unsafe. I’m frightened. And I just feel so alone.”

Darin lowered his hands, which only made His Majesty burst into tears.

“I know,” he whimpered. “It’s a stupid request. Every idea I’ve ever come up with is stupid. I’d only been preparing for this for my entire life, only to be taken away from everything! There’s only moving forward, no time to breathe. I get it. I already know. I shan’t dwell on it anymore when I am supposed to be in control. I know that. I just thought—”

Darin cut him off by taking him into his arms. He pulled him into a hug, fierce but warm. And under him, Sebastian trembled and devolved further into sobs while clinging just as tight.

Darin rubbed his back, let him cry for as long as he needed. “That’s it,” he whispered. “Let it out. It’s all right, Bastian.”

His king shuddered and wept, unchanged. It made Darin’s hold gentler.

Synopsis on the left:
Worldly exposure was necessary for Eden Hollow’s compound, ensuring that followers both had a choice to stay but also had no reason to leave. It was time for Avery Miller’s six month sabbatical, and although he was more than sure of his devotion to his faith, he also knew that some people that left never came back.

When he decides to take his sabbatical in Southern Maine, he runs into a familiar face that he never thought he’d see again. Tristan Lowell defected and has no desire to return to the compound, and although Avery knows he shouldn’t be speaking to him, he missed his dearest friend far too much to follow the rules.

As old, buried feelings that he refuses to name reignite and he finds himself drawn to breaking his tenets for worldly delights, can Avery confidently return to the compound as planned? Or will he decide that a blissful romance is a future more worth coveting?

#WIPSnips | Well From my “old beast yaoi” batb retelling 🌹 Pascal finds a greenhouse while trying to search for his host, only to try and take one of the roses. It doesn’t go well.

The next morning, he tried finding his host again. The storm had stopped, and he still needed to return home. He looked outside. No one. He explore the halls. Deserted. It was dark.

His wanderings led him to a surprisingly well kept greenhouse. It was so warm that he had to open his shirt collar. The flowers within were beautiful, decorating every inch. The iron holding the glass in place was sturdy. He hadn’t seen a place so beautiful in all his life. He almost didn’t want to leave.

He saw lovely rose bushes. They reminded him of Celine. She loved beautiful things. At one time, he even planted a garden for her. Perhaps he could take just one. He could offer it to her shrine upon returning home.

But as he reached out and plucked it, suddenly the calm air grew cold and oppressive. It was in an instant. Such a supernatural force made him whip around.

“Thief!” A deep voice bellowed.

Pascal nearly fell back. Towering over him was a monster.

“Careful now, Milo Ashton,” Cam said, squeezing his hand gently once more. “Don’t want you falling and messing up that pretty face of yours.”
Milo’s cheeks burned as he sputtered out, “I don’t have a pretty face.”
He quickly looked down, trying to find safety in hiding his face. Who was this man? He didn’t understand how anyone could just say things like that to a stranger so casually, things that weren’t even true. A pretty face. No one had ever called Milo pretty before. Why did he feel so excited by it?
Cam’s laugh echoed through the trees, then he placed a finger under Milo’s chin, forcing him to look up. Cam’s eyes methodically drew up and down Milo’s face—staring at each inch, lingering on his lips and his eyes—and he nodded firmly as his grin grew.
“That’s what I thought. You have a pretty face.”
Milo didn’t know what to do, what to say—so he just said, “Um.”

The most queernormative world I’ve created is the one in Fealty Among Bastards. No one bats an eye at other sexualities and gender identities, and healthcare’s widely accessible. *The only exception is Ailovell’s patriarchal royal bloodline, which is challenged as outdated in the story’s plot.
