Even the schools are starting to be built in places that largely only serve one neighborhood. Take Bexley Elementary in LOL. It’s only really attended by students in Bexley and the directly neighboring subdivisions and students with parents who have the time and money to drive them across the county

Most of these amenities are largely built now to only really serve each individual subdivision. Sure, there’s hundreds of pools around here, but they’re only available to those who live in those subdivisions, which is inherently exclusionary.

This is fairly common in Europe and I, for one, would welcome that immediately. It provides built-in grace for having to speed up to avoid a crash while also providing meaningful enforcement of speed limits. The only reason I end up speeding is that everyone else is. I would prefer enforced limits.

1. 🧵 on both German intercity rail and the TCP high-speed rail proposal, inspired by someone on Twitter asking @mattyglesias.bsky.social about how I'm addressing Deutsche Bahn's own problems with reliability. So, to start with, here are some schematics; NEC is what we propose, not current service.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk have left Houston, Tampa, New York and other major cities without head meteorologists just ahead of what will be another busy hurricane season This is straight-up life-threatening malpractice (h/t @lisamjarvis.bsky.social ) www.cnn.com/2025/05/02/w...
A map of the contiguous 48 states titled:
Thirty National Weather Service offices are without a chief meteorologist
Some of these offices issue forecasts for major population centers such as New York City, Houston and Cleveland. Several are prone to hurricanes and tornadoes.
Callouts include:
Upton, NY - Covers New York City and southern Connecticut
Tampa, FL - Hard hit by Hurricane Milton in 2024
Houston, TX - All management positions vacant
Paducah/Louisville/Jackson, KY - Nearly the whole state of Kentucky is covered by forecast areas without leadership

I am going to re-do & edit a thread I wrote on Twitter for the 10th anniversary because it feels even more relevant today as fascism overtakes the country, and the very existence of our government's ability to respond to disasters is under threat.

Fun Fact: Ever heard of GO Transit Detroit/Windsor Line? This line was proposed in 1989 by the Think Rail Group, as apart of a larger proposal for rail transportation in Ontario. The first phase of this plan recommended transferring all VIA Rail service running within Ontario to GO Transit.

With the notable difference that, in Italy, when a judge ordered that the migrants be returned back pending the evaluation of their status, the government complied immediately. They complained about "ideological judges," but they complied. That's the entire problem of what's going on in the US.

IT. IS. NOT. WORKING. MDOT's own data says - at current funding levels - our road conditions are about to fall off a cliff. AND YET, we just took on BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN DEBT to widen a bunch of freeways and add lanes to a system we already can't afford to maintain. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE.
Graph of Trunkline Historic and Projected Pavement Conditions from page 21 of MDOT's 2025-2029 5YTP. It projects a steep decline in overall pavement condition at current funding levels, whereas with an extra couple billion every year, we could maybe stabilize the situation and eventually reach our target. Maybe.

Was poking around Albuquerque and spotted this really cool map by @humantransit.bsky.social’s team analyzing the connectivity of the city’s street network. Because most transit riders are not crows, street design matters to accessing transit and everything else.
Walk Connectivity analysis of Albuquerque, New Mexico by Jarrett Walker & Associates. The city is divided into a grid of city block sized hexagons, colored in three degrees of walkability measured by percentage of land within half a mile that can actually be reached by walking half a mile or less. Most walkable is more than 50%. Somewhat walkable is 35-50%. Least walkable is less than 35%. Infographic in the legend compares the half mile circle radius reachable if flying and ignoring street design versus a half mile orange walking diamond when street design is incorporated. The area within the orange box is where you could read in half a mile in a well-connected street network. Walk connectivity is calculated by dividing the gray area by the area in the orange box.
