Annecdotally, I've heard that the US/Canada trade war is horrible for asthmatic cats. Many US vets used to buy inhalers from suppliers in Canada because it was 10x cheaper. Now they're forced to buy inhalers in the states where the cost is prohibitive. Cats will suffer+die thanks to DT! #vetmed

Adams refuted essentialism in this text... at least when it suited her! She reproduces such classics as men being inherently violent, meat being the root of all evil, and the myth of the Paleolithic vegetarian matriarchal golden age. And then there's this.
nence, Women’s Rights, and Vegetarianism.” In 1865, Dr. James Barry died. Dr. Barry was an army surgeon for more than forty four years, a vegetarian, and someone brought up by an ardent follower of Mary Wollstonecraft; it was discovered upon his death that Dr. Barry was a woman. Some who suspected all along that Dr. Barry was a woman referred to the vegetarian diet as one of the signs of her gender as well as her fondness for pets.3 Clara Barton, founder of the Red Cross,

The vegan land conservation argument—that animal agriculture is an inefficient use of fertile cropland—is literally over two thousand years old (and arguably more true now than it was then!).
This was a longstanding vegetarian issue and its first traces appear in Plato’s Republic when Socrates tells Glaucon that meat production necessitates large amounts of pasture. Resultingly, it will require cutting “off a slice of our neighbours’ territory; and if they too are not content with necessaries, but give themselves up to getting unlimited wealth, they will want a slice of ours.” Thus Socrates pronounces, “So the next thing will be, Glaucon, that we shall be at war.”27 In 1785, William Paley’s Th e Principles of Moral and Political Philosophy raised the economic and agricultural issues associated with meat eating: “A piece of ground capable of supplying animal food sufficient for the subsistence of ten persons would sustain, at least, the double of that number with grain, roots and milk.”28 Richard Phillips’s 1811 vegetarian article argues: “The forty-seven millions of acres in England and Wales would maintain in abundance as many human inhabitants if they lived wholly on grain, fruits and vegetables; but they sustain only twelve millions scantily while animal food is made the basis of human subsistence.”29 Percy Shelley’s essay culminates this position: claiming that with vegetarianism “the monopolizing eater of animal flesh would no longer destroy his constitution by devouring an acre at a meal. . . . The most fertile districts of the habitable globe are now actually cultivated by men for animals, at a delay and waste of aliment absolutely incapable of calculation.”30

OK so I actually read the pre-print. It's awful. You cannot have "pain" without a conscious experience! That's why they put you under anaesthesia when you have a painful medical procedure!
LLM pain?

In our framework, pain1
1
Our concept of “pain” is related to what people ordinarily may call “suffering”. In ordinary language, “pain” is often used to refer to an unpleasant physical sensation or emotional experience, while suffering describes the broader state of distress caused by pain or other adverse experiences. However, there are also differences, which is why we use “pain” throughout. Most strikingly, suffering, unlike our notion of pain, plausibly presupposes conscious experience. This does not imply, by principle, that LLMs are capable or incapable of suffering, and some of the functional properties of the states we examine would in some views fall closer to suffering than pain. Establishing that is beyond our scope. We simply aim to consistently use one word for which we provide a definition instead of multiple nuanced synonyms. refers to a certain kind of internal state that is typically aversive and disliked by its subject; causally associated with behaviors such as avoidance, attempts to terminate or reduce the state, and disruption of normal reasoning or behavior. We use a wide notion of pain that includes not only physical pain but also, for example, emotional (grief) or social (humiliation) pain. However, we assume that pain is distinct from generic negative valence and from states such as fear, anger, or sadness. Our aim is to find a uniform representation of pain in LLMs.

David Quammen's essay in The New York Times today closes with this paragraph. It's both a scientific falsehood, and an incredibly dangerous narrative. If you're willing to give me five minutes of your time, I'd like to explain why.
The Ebola virus doesn’t need to spill back. It abides in its reservoir host, and awaits its next opportunity. A virus can’t climb out of a bat or a monkey and fly off in search of human prey. It can only spill over. If humans left the reservoir host alone — not hunting it, not capturing it, not eating it, not exporting it live, not disturbing its forest habitat — the virus wouldn’t re-emerge in humans. It would remain where it is, harming no one. But of course that’s not what happens. And when viruses spill, they often spill into us, because the human population is such a big, busy target.

Witchcraft seems to embody the shadow of kinship, the dark projection of our deeper anxieties about family and private life. The witch's familiar suckles on her blood just as a Christian drinks the milk of his livestock. Relatedness is facilitated through metabolic sharing of fluid substance.
In the course of the late 1570s and the 1580s, the expected act of giving blood to a familiar slowly became more regular in the reports, as an ongoing and sometimes even daily tribute to it, rather than a reward for specific acts or a rite to seal the initial making of the relationship.” By 1580 the idea had appeared that the sucking was taken from the same part of the body each time, and that the act would leave a permanent mark, which, if found on a suspected witch's body, could provide evidence in favour of the charges against her or (far more rarely) him.® As has long been recognized among specialist scholars, this notion blended with the belief, by then widespread in Europe, that when making the initial pact with a witch, the Devil or a devil put a special mark, like a brand, on the person's body. By 1600 British demonologists were expressing the concept as one of the proofs that could be used to determine guilt in a charge of witchcraft.” In the ensuing decades it took an especially influential form: that the mark took the shape of a special teat to suckle the familiar, often concealed in or near the genitals. The spread of these ideas seems to have been fitful and patchy, with initial regional variations. It is tempting to regard the south-east as their main point of generation and diffusion, but less easy to prove. Certainly the concept of the special teat or teats was prominent there by the early seventeenth century. It provided crucial evidence in a celebrated trial at Edmonton, just north of London, in 1621, and was a central feature of England’s biggest witch-hunt, the major series of East Anglian trials in 1645-7, propelled by the team of witch-finders led by Matthew Hopkins.”

Rise and grind girls, we have a new way to become a sigmillionaire 🧚‍♀️💸✨
Credulity was also undermined by authors of comedies that, while not disowning the fairy tradition in general, hinged plots on impersonations of fairies and similar beings, such as bugs and goblins, by human beings, or on pretended conjurations of them. Sometimes this action is undertaken by villains, and sometimes by heroes and heroines, but the aim is always to persuade gullible victims to part with their wealth or act against their natural inclinations. Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Jonson's The Alchemist are the most famous of a series of these works.'™ As scholars of them have long recognized, they were accompanied by well-publicized instances of real confidence trickery in which criminals attempted to part victims from possessions or sums of money on the pretence of introducing them to the fairy queen, and sometimes the king as well, who would allegedly grant them riches or other favours. There are three such cases listed in pamphlets and legal records between 1595 and 1614 alone.” They must have further encouraged scepticism.
