Helmets are often misinterpreted as the solution to safety. Put simply, they aren't. Helmets protect your head from an uncontrolled fall. Proper infrastructure is what protects you from multi-ton vehicles. Don't conflate the two, they are worlds apart.

In 1989 I stretched my ACL to spaghetti and tore my MCL and the orthopedist told me I'd be in a hip to toe cast for 6-9 months. The most important bet of my lifetime was choosing the 6 weeks in an immobilizer + PT. I'll eventually need the surgery, but will be walking out of the recovery room.
