Weird new habit: when I tag a github issue with 'good first issue', I leave the tab open so I can come back to it in an hour to quickly ban the bots that have opened terrible slop PRs. Maybe Microsoft should make this the first useful Copilot+ feature.

An odd habit from listening to podcasts on earbuds and skipping past their ads is that when I call some customer service line and get put on hold, I immediately reach up to the earbud to try to skip past its ads and muzak.

Intrusive ID collection has become normalized enough that I just got a phishing email that went straight for demanding I upload a government ID to them. Button in the email goes directly to this form, zero attempt to build credibility or increase urgency.
screenshot of an email: from "DreamHost", subject "[Due Soon] Identity verification required to continue using DreamHost", body has their logo and reads: Hi, We need you to complete a quick identity verification to get your hosting service fully activated. It takes just a minute: [button: Verify Identity] If you have any questions, just reply to this email, we're happy to help. Thanks, DreamHost Supportscreenshot of a dreamhost-branded phishing form with a dropdown for selecting ID type, box for social security number, instructions for uploading photos of the front and back of an ID, and a couple checkboxes for terms of service and legalese "confirm I'm the account holder or authorised [sic] representative"

it was already a close race, but now it’s a dead heat OpenAI announces two more accidental felonies openai.com/index/third-...
A white-background bar chart titled “Felony Bench” compares five AI companies by a tongue-in-cheek “Score.” Anthropic has an orange bar reaching 3, and OpenAI has a black bar also reaching 3. Meta, Mistral, and Moonshot each have gray bars at 0. The y-axis is labeled “Score” with ticks from 0 to 3, and each bar has its numeric value displayed above it. Anthropic’s x-axis label is orange, OpenAI’s is black, and the remaining company names are gray. Light horizontal gridlines run across the chart.

found a normal car
A photo of the side of an old Mitsubishi Galant sedan that has been crudely but creatively spray painted with a bunch of colorful stuff, including a scene of somebody fishing in a lake and fire coming off of the car's rear wheel arch. The car's wheels and tires are also painted. The car's hood features a figure of a man, images of stars, and text that reads "don't open" with an arrow pointing to the hood latch. A set of red lips with white teeth is painted on the font bumper. Above the windshield, the word "ambulance" is scrawled. The passenger side of the car features a reclining nude figure over top of the front wheel arch and various faces, including a large yellow head with a green tongue licking text that says "03BIS HI". A stick figure waves an American flag in one corner of the rear fender. The back of the car features the first six digits of Pi painted over top of a pattern of polka dots, plus more faces and shapes drawn around a bumper sticker that says "Grandparent, Pomona College" and another that says "Pride"

Due to personal commitments, the next Lobsters office hours won't be until August 18. So let me share some fun stats from the recent perf work! Lobsters sees ~250k human visitors per day. This is a rough estimation, we'd need client-side telemetry to improve but precision wouldn't change anything.
