I’m convinced dinner parties only happened in sitcom land.

When I was growing up my parents threw the occasional party with cheese hedgehogs and sausages on sticks. I have cooked for friends a handful of times but nothing as fancy as an actual “dinner party”. I doubt it’s a thing anyone really does regularly, or ever did.

The dreadful decline of hosting at home: ‘I feel shame any time a friend comes over’
It used to be quite normal to pop next door for a coffee or invite friends over for dinner. But not any more. What’s behind this change – and just how damaging is it?

God. We wasted an entire season of Origin Story telling the story of this word, when we could've just checked in with James here.

So true. It's also the exact opposite effect to the Tories' other (more sensible) plan to get rid of stamp duty. Mangling the housing market just after adopting a policy which might help rationalise it.

I don’t need algorithm generated recommendations. Just put the shows on iplayer and I’ll decide what to watch for myself. Maybe have someone discerning like Mark Kermode to do a “pick of the best” to give me a few pointers.

"Does the UK want to reopen the bitter Brexit debate?" asks Vicki Young. There is a way of reviewing our relationship with Europe that does not reopen "the bitter Brexit debate", which I think is underpriced. We could all be honest and agree that Brexit was a shit idea.

I used to genuinely believe Trump was an asset for foreign powers. Probably Russia. I had vastly underestimated in fact he was just the American dream in it’s ultimately evolved form. A grasping, fraudulent, pervert pensioner pulling every lazy emotional string it can in its drive to get wealthy.

something very funny about the Bayeux Tapestry getting 5 stars after 940 years, as if Bishop Odo of Bayeux has been sat at home all this time waiting for the review, absolutely raging - "I gave that Guardian journalist a press comp on OPENING NIGHT for god's sake"

Can't we tell it's conference season, with a take with the aroma of warmed up dogshit from Speelman. The economic instrumentalism on show in her speech is just ... depressing. Worse, she's been part of a feeder system that never broke from the idea of education as an industrial process.

RIP Jeffrey Archer, not a day goes by when I don't think about the judge in his 1987 libel case (which Archer "won" by doing a bunch of perjury) summing up for the jury by going "would a guilty man have such a hot wife". one of the most insane legal moments of all time

Another café doing an AI flyer that looks like all of the others. People saying they won't eat there, others saying why blame small businesses for using AI? Yes, of course, the environmental cost, but mainly, it looks shit. How much for the ball bearings on an armadillo, topped with matchsticks?
