💡 Batteries of Chinese-sold EVs tend to run with lithium iron phosphate (LFP); those sold in Europe are more commonly made with cobalt (NMC). ▶️ LFP batteries are considerably cheaper and are gaining global market share. More than half of global LFP patents are held by Chinese investors.

💡 EU imports of Chinese plug-in hybrid EVs are surging. PHEV imports are not covered by the EU's additional tariffs on Chinese battery electric vehicles, introduced in December 2024. The EU has now approached China, asking for a voluntary cap on hybrid exports.

💡 Europe innovates in wind and heat pumps. From 2014-2024, Europe's share of global patenting grew by 5.0% for wind and 8.7% for heat pumps. It remained constant for nuclear. Europe's share is declining across other clean technologies - partly driven by the faster patenting growth in China.
