EU dollar dependence is rooted in global pricing practices ranging from the dollar-denominated benchmarks of the London Metal Exchange and agricultural commodities at the Chicago Board of Trade to complex high-tech and aerospace supply chains (think AMSL)

Can the ECB stop chasing oil price spikes, please? This is the message of this important study in a nutshell. Inflation is all about fossilflation. So, we need a way to stabilize our economies that does not undermine the green transition we need, which is exactly what rate hikes end up doing.

Tightening against an energy price shock is a crude response, that only works if it chokes the economy, and green investment with it. It shouldn't be so controversial for the ECB to accept it.

"Magataotao" on Twitter writes: "I am Catholic. This👇is not my Pope."

Attached is a video of the Pope saying that we should search for peace and reject war.

A community note under their tweet says: "You are not a Catholic if you do not accept the Pope, but rather a schismatic.

Canon 751: “Schism is the refusal of submission to the Supreme Pontiff,” ie. the Pope.

Krugman is right that Europe's relative living standards have held up better than the decline narrative suggests. His critics are right that America has built a lead in intangible capital and tech.

Fully share the conclusion about the slim chances of EUR/RMB—but I recently learned from @helene-rey.bsky.social that persistent CA deficits are *not* a prerequisite for currency internationalization. The US is in fact "the banker of the world", central in gross positions www.ft.com/content/5bc0...

Equally persistent is the misunderstanding that the international role of the dollar requires the US to run sustained current account deficits. In reality, global dollar liquidity is supported by the vast stock of US Treasuries and other safe-dollar assets held across the world. When foreign investors hold US Treasuries, they are recorded as gross external liabilities of the US but they are not necessarily linked to net financial flows captured in the current account.
