That Bachman is out of print these days - nice find! (King quit publishing “Rage” - for fair reasons, I’ll add, but means you can’t buy it “new” anymore.) And ALBEMUTH is fascinating if you’re a PKD fan, doubly so if you’ve read the VALIS trilogy before, because it’s sort of the first draft.

Out of curiosity, was ACE IN THE HOLE considered as a pairing at all? I’m always curious as to the “might have been” pairings, but ACE feels like a good one here for a lot of reasons.

On National Poetry Day, here’s a short poem about the power of poetry to change the world.
The Power of Poetry

with things falling apart
and anarchy let loose,

it was only poetry, he found,
which had any use,

so he reached for his copy
of The Complete Works of Yeats

and bludgeoned the President
of the United States

Hunter S. Thompson, pretty much calling the birth of the 21st century after 9/11.
We are At War now, according to President Bush, and I take him at his word. He also says this War might last for "a very long time."

Generals and military scholars will tell you that eight or 10 years is actually not such a long time in the span of human history -- which is no doubt true -- but history also tells us that 10 years of martial law and a war-time economy are going to feel like a Lifetime to people who are in their twenties today. The poor bastards of what will forever be known as Generation Z are doomed to be the first generation of Americans who will grow up with a lower standard of living than their parents enjoyed.

That is extremely heavy news, and it will take a while for it to sink in. The 22 babies born in New York City while the World Trade Center burned will never know what they missed. The last half of the 20th century will seem like a wild party for rich kids, compared to what's coming now. The party's over, folks.

werner herzog on AI filmmaking (from here www.indiewire.com/features/int...)
Q: A couple years ago at IDFA, I saw this movie "About a Hero," which is this partly Al-generated hybrid documentary that tries to recreate the atmosphere of your films.

A: The intention of this young filmmaker was never to remake any [of my films], but making something in the spirit. And I immediately said, "You will fail. It is such a stupid idea. It's phenomenally, abysmally stupid. I will not take part in it." He wanted me to explain things and have my voice in it.
I said, "You are alone. There's such a thing as free speech, which I respect. So go ahead and fail." And it is a failure, period.
It's so standardized that Al can step in because there's not real storytelling. It's mimicry of something that has happened before. And I welcome Al to replace all the idiots who are into nothing but repeating, repeating, repeating until it's ad nauseam.
When it's ad nauseam, please, please, please let Al step in and do the job.

Sometimes, a movie delivers a series of shots that are pure cinema. This is one of them. I have not edited this. It just happens that way in the movie.

It's got a darkness and bleakness at its core that I think people don't expect; everyone thinks of the music and the dancing, and not, say, the scene on the bridge or some of the family scenes.

So, so much of that movie feels ahead of its time, and yet the ending just had too much optimism. (See also ACE IN THE HOLE.) But, man, does every other bit of it feel prescient to the point of queasiness.

I have never forgotten about the time Feige saw some of Chloe Zhao's nature/sunlight footage and was stunned as to how she could have ever made CGI look like that; nor will I forget Tom Holland talking with awe about how Nolan films a movie with a complete script and what a difference that made.

When I started prepping for a new film class, I didn’t really think about the fringe benefit of getting to spend my summer literally REQUIRED to watch a run of the greatest movies ever made. Hot take: movies are good!
A stack of DVDs and Blu-rays, full of great movies like THE APARTMENT, JAWS, DOG DAY AFTERNOON, M, CITIZEN KANE, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, KWAIDAN, UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG, CASABLANCA, and DOUBLE INDEMNITY, as well as collections of the Marx Brothers, Buster Keaton, the BEFORE trilogy, and the Universal FRANKENSTEIN films.
