Dear councils, 97% of UK meadows are gone. So if you have wildflowers like ox-eye daisies on roadverges and in public spaces, don't spray them with weedkiller or over-mow them. Let's give pollinating insects like bees and butterflies a chance 🐝

Please say no to garden poisons such as pesticides and weedkillers, to help keep them out of the food chain. Hedgehogs, for example, can eat over 100 invertebrates every night. #wildlife #gardening #nature

NSIDC's monthly sea ice analyses are back! In the Arctic, the sea ice extent this summer was tracking 2012 levels until August. In the Antarctic, sea ice had an unusually large mid-winter decline over a week in August. nsidc.org/sea-ice-today/analyses/ar…

A company got EPA approval to sink 20 tons of sugarcane waste into the Gulf's Orca Basin to "store carbon." Even if they blanketed the entire basin, it would offset less than a week of human emissions, while risking one of the rarest ecosystems on Earth. I wrote for @mongabay on why. 🧪 #marinelife

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.

People are always surprised to learn that packaging, processing, and transportation are almost always small contributors (<10%) of food-related GHG emissions. The TYPE of food we eat -- meat versus plants -- is a MUCH bigger factor.

If you told someone you invented a new transportation system but it would kill more than 40,000 Americans each year, they would look at you like you were crazy. A stark example of status quo bias. Cars and guns. Automobile deaths and mass murder. It doesn't have to be this way.

Occidental Petroleum will begin operating the world’s largest carbon removal facility, Stratos, at the end of 2026. The facility is designed to remove up to 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ from the atmosphere annually. If it works, that's a time machine that will take us back by ~6 minutes every year.

You would normally expect a total of around 97% of average at this point in the month, but the UK is currently tracking its third driest July on record with only 35% of average rainfall. 

England and Wales have seen less than 20% of their average rainfall for the month.

Beef is the coal of the food system. It's one of the most emissions-intensive things we consume, and Americans eat a lot of it -- the equivalent of 6 burgers a week. Cutting back to one serving of beef a week (similar to EAT-Lancet) in all high-income countries would be a huge win for climate.
