my 7yo "smart" TV was getting unwatchably laggy. I exhausted the troubleshooting tips for the TV and the Wifi. Eventually I bought a streaming stick and it worked, at the cost of £40 and handing over our data to yet another tech company. Oh for the days when hardware was hardware

This is a critical point that’s repeatedly ignored. If you’re under 45 there’s a good chance you’re still working in 2050 when we should be at net zero. If you’re under 25 there’s a good chance you’re alive in 2100 when current trends suggest we’ll be at 3C of warming and all that comes with it.

Line chart comparing planned versus actual carbon-capture capacity: multiple report-year projection lines rise sharply from the mid-2020s while a red shaded area for actual operational CCS stays low and flat through 2024, showing planned capacity far exceeds realized.

Renewables-plus-storage is so cheap that in large parts of the world it is cheaper to build a whole new clean power plant than just pay for the fuel and maintenance for a fully-depreciated gas generator. Renewables aren’t just threatening new-build gas — they are undermining existing plants.

This might be one of the funniest chart about energy scenarios I’ve seen. You can hardly see “actual” for gas
Winners and Losers
The IEA overestimated gas growth in Asia and underestimated solar

Gas
• Forecast 547 TWh
• Actual 17 TWh

Solar
• Forecast 465 TWh
• Actual 1,333 TWh

Note: Shows expected growth in Asian power generation between 2018 and 2025, based on actual 2018 generation, actual 2025 generation, and the 2018 World Energy Outlook's Current Policies Scenario estimates for 2025. Actual 2025 generation figures are from Ember.

We've reached the point where you don't even need to "stop" it. You can go back to allowing solar and wind development that the market will favor because it's now substantially cheaper than any other form of energy. Reframe the problem as Republicans hampering renewables as a source of cheap energy.
