Imagine the pitch for this show: "It's a watchdog program with me ringleading a bunch of young guys in suits. We'll do hard-hitting investigations between showing phallic vegetables and a dog that says "sausages". Half the country will watch every Sunday."

"We each have responsibility to radically re-evaluate our own complicity in their power." I'm not normally one to recommend marking books but The Nerd Reich requires several different colour highlighters - there are so many quotes you will want to refer back to. My thoughts, condensed:
Absolutely essential to understanding what is happening in America, and the wider world, right now. Durán is an excellent journalist who, without hyperbole, lays out the facts, the timeline, and the men (it is mostly men) who are at the core of the concerted effort by intersecting parties to destroy America in its current form. He puts a spotlight on the motivating ideologies active in Silicon Valley, and how they connect and empower a disproportionately influential group of men (it is mostly men) in venture capital, crypto, Project 2025, the Republican Party, a new wave of "Christians", the military industrial complex, and a handful of billionaires. It is a clarion call to action, and ultimately hopeful. Durán offers broad solutions to set us back on the right path, as societies and as individuals: "We each have responsibility to radically reevaluate our own complicity in their power."

More from my PISA report dorking: Average reading scores for OECD-23 countries have plummeted from 501 in 2012 to 466 in 2025. Similar drops for math and science. What does a 35-point drop mean? The OECD says 20 points is about what 15-year-olds typically learn in one year.
Chart showing average PISA test scores for OECD-23 countries from 2000 to 2025. They are steady/rising slightly from 2000 to 2012, then decline sharply.
E.g., reading was above 501 in 2012, 492 in 2018, 482 in 2022, and 466 in 2025.

Nick Beckstead, noted longtermist and "effective altruist,” just comes out and says it: "But it now seems more plausible to me that saving a life in a rich country is substantially more important than saving a life in a poor country, other things being equal."
This is precisely why Nick Beckstead, a noted EA, argued in 2013 that, given the "overwhelming" moral importance of the far future - "millions, billions, and trillions" of years from now - we should prioritize saving the lives of people in rich countries over those in poor countries, other things being equal. The reason is that people in rich countries are better positioned to influence the far future.

To take another example, saving lives in poor countries may have significantly smaller ripple effects

than saving and improving lives in rich countries. Why? Richer countries have substantially more

innovation, and their workers are much more economically productive. By ordinary standards at

least by ordinary enlightened humanitarian standards saving and improving lives in rich countries

is about equally as important as saving and improving lives in poor countries, provided lives are

improved by roughly comparable amounts. But it now seems more plausible to me that saving a life

in a rich country is substantially more important than saving a life in a poor country, other things
being equal.
Screenshot from Beckstead's 2013 PhD dissertation, regarded as one of the founding documents of longtermism, one of the main cause areas of EA.

Finn McRedmond thinks "Mary Antoinette" was one of Henry VIII's wives. aren't editors supposed to catch their columnists when they betray their ignorance so severely it damages the credibility of the newspaper for continuing to publish them?
Beautiful women have been driving the world insane as long as has been recorded. The semi-mythical Helen of Troy is the most obvious evidence of this time-worn tradition. Cleopatra was a main character in that great hinge point of history: the collapse of the Roman republic and the creation of the Roman emperor. Anne Boleyn and Mary Antoinette – by today’s standards perhaps not as “hot” as Sweeney – scrambled Henry VIII’s faculties, redirecting the House of Tudor twice.
