With the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu, we are going to see a big uptick in adoptions. As someone who works in Grogu rescue, I will remind you: when you adopt a Baby Yoda, you are committing to its 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘯. Grogus can live up to 900 years. They can also move shit around your apartment.

Whatever happens to us after death, I hope MM was granted everlasting peace, caring & unconditional love… and a total block on everything that’s happened here in the living realm since because why is “objectifying & exploiting her” one of the few inexhaustibly renewable forms of energy?

My very least fave thing about Le ADHD is how it gets in the way of doing things I *want* to do. Things I love to do. Things that are an undisputed benefit to my life without any real downside. It’s not about being “a bit messy” or whatever.

I am seething at myself for missing this post. There is only one correct answer: 1. Summer of Soul … a very big gap… 2. The Rory Gallagher Irish Tour 1974 film directed by Tony Palmer 3. Your favourite. 4. Everything else. That I rate SoS over my fave bands is the highest praise possible.

A swift, sincere apology when we cause harm goes an awfully long way. Being told directly when we mess up is a *gift* because it allows us to make amends & do better instead of continuing to mess up. An apology doesn’t erase context but it does acknowledge harm. Why wouldn’t we do that?

production of The Muppet Show should not be dependent on petty vulgarities like “ratings” or “revenue.” it should be preserved as a vital function of american culture. it should have a taxpayer-funded budget rivaling the CIA

Cruelty is anhedonic. It rarely delivers the euphoria promised because, in the abstract, what feels righteous and joyful inevitably reveals itself to be sordid and small. Then it's "No not like that". "No not enough". "No the real battle, the forever war to make this feel good starts now". Forever.

Holy Mary mother of dragons, 1984 is a tough watch but in a cinema it’s almost unbearable. John Hurt is immense & I think Richard Burton concentrated his extensive experience of playing bastards into scumbag O’Brien. I feel I could actually surrender to total panic. it’s just a film. Jaysus, Rich

Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.
This is the saddest day of my professional life.
Today is not only the final recording of the latest series of The Infinite Monkey Cage, it is my last ever Monkey Cage.
I never thought that I would have to leave the show. I always imagined going on until | dropped dead under the studio lights due to a brain aneurysm caused by my final attempt to understand notions of quantum gravity or the shock of being told about fly maggot infestations in the sacks of macaque monkeys.
I resigned in September, after sixteen years of dedication to the show,
A show that I named and helped develop over all those years.
Unfortunately, my opinions outside the BBC have been considered problematic for sometime, whether it has been voicing support for the trans community, criticism of Donald Trump, numerous other outlandish opinions, including once gently criticising Stephen Fry.
These things were considered to conflict with being a freelance BBC science presenterIn a recent meeting where BBC Studio executives again voiced problems with me, I realised my choices.
Obedience and being quieter to remain making Monkey Cage, or 'Resign and have the freedom to speak out against what I believe are injustices'.
•
I chose the latter.
It broke my heart.
I love this show and I love the audience, and it is because of the audience in particular, that this decision was so difficult to make.
I kept thinking about all the extremist voices promoting hate and division. They are being given so many platforms, while voices that represent kindness, open mindedness, empathy seem to be scarcer and scarcer.
I felt I couldn't pamper myself with the luxury of silence.
One of my many privileges is that I am able to resign and I can speak out even if it is to the detriment of my career.I have thought a lot about my heroes, Sinead O Connor, James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, and so many more.
I think of Sinead's words, "the job of an artist is to be themselves at any cost".
James Baldwin said prejudice was really just a word for cowardice.
Audre Lorde, viewing her life, wrote that her only regrets were her silences.
I think of my father as I resign, he brought me up to believe in fairness , justice and kindness.
Though my heart is broken, it is also full of fire.
I apologise to our incredible listeners for my departure, your love of the show means a great deal.
I am so sorry to let you down.
I hope that you can understand my reasoning.
I have to accept that I am not what the current
BBC expects of their freelance presenters.Despite this I should add that I have always worked far more than my contracted hours to try and ensure the show was always the best it could be, as well as making myself accessible and responsive to the audience wherever and whenever I met them. Every night, we have recorded, I have been filled with determination to make the best show possible. This was not
"just a job"
I hope that with my departure I can be a better ally to the LGBTQ community, to the neurodivergent community, to activists fighting against those who aim to brutalise society, to those currently in prison on hunger strike, and to all those who fight for a more inclusive world.
From many conversations, I know there are many Monkey Cage listeners who support these communities and activists too.
The strawberry is dead.
Long live the strawberry. B

Imagine being such a bigoted fuck (or group thereof) that you drive out Robin Ince, a decent, principled, kind human, from a show such as Infinite Monkey Cage. Fuck them and fuck this timeline. May they perpetually step on Lego and find their waking hours haunted by their inadequacies.

Day 5 of Richmas found me once again at @britishfilminstitute and instead of just The Night of the Iguana, I switched screenings of My Cousin Rachel to today from tomorrow. So I got to hang out with Ava Gardner *and* Olivia De Havilland too. Both were introduced by Kate Burton, which was v cool.

It’s a bit weird to be listening to #JeffWaynesWaroftheWorlds as I walk along the millennium bridge just as #RichardBurton gets to the bit about the “sad, weary exodus” as the Martians cut through bridges as though they were paper. The terror he captures in “one appeared above Big Ben”

I’m thinking of doing a post per day in December about #RichardBurton, given I’ll be spending a good proportion of the month at the BFI for their Rich B season. Maybe on here or instagram or patreon. Who knows. What I *do* know is that it will be called Richmas, as nobody else is calling it.

This is what is happening. It is cynical. It is strategic. It is organised. It is well funded. And we need to pay attention. The far right - and their cheerleaders, mimics, tribute acts, and handmaidens have identified two presentational frameworks that give them cut-through and traction. 1/7

Adverts should be representative of traditional British families
The characters Private Pike and Sergeant Wilson in Dad’s Army as played by Ian Lavender and John Le Mesurier. Both wear the brown uniforms of the Home Guard. Pike stands on the left looking at Wilson, who is facing the camera.
Pike is a young thin white man with short brown hair covered by his uniform hat. Pike wears a non-regulation knitted scarf tied around his neck - maroon with a blue and white stripe. He is also wearing a slightly petulant expression.
Wilson is an older man with short grey hair, and is a little shorter than Pike. Wilson is looking rather unruffled by whatever is bothering Pike. Of course he’s unruffled, he’s Sgt Wilson.
Any strong familial resemblance between these two characters is purely and absolutely to be played for laughs except when it should be played for pathos.
