From James Sowerby's Coloured Figures of English Fungi or Mushrooms, published in three volumes between 1797 and 1809.
llustration is a detailed scientific illustration of a type of cup fungus, specifically identified by the text as Peziza coccinea (now known as Sarcoscypha coccinea or the scarlet elfcup) and Peziza epidendra. The illustration shows several specimens of the fungus at different stages of growth and from various angles. The fungi are depicted with vibrant red interiors and white exteriors, growing on a piece of dead wood.

Very nice little exhibition at Haslemere Museum, on the museum's origins. Including some delightful memorabilia for E.W. Swanton fans.
A display photo in sepia of an old library. Caption reads: The Museum Library. This image shows the Library at the East Street museum in October 1912. Once known as the Book Museum, it was likely the earliest library in Haslemere. Seven long tables and six bookshelves lined the room, while three warm-air stoves kept the space dry and welcoming for visitors. Framed paintings adorned the walls on every side, creating an atmosphere where art and knowledge met. An old photo of Mr E. W. Swanton who became the Museum's first curator, in 1897. He retired in 1948. He is pictured in a woolen suit next to some kind of brass telescope contraption. A vintage printed booklet with E. W. Swanton's signature on the front in a flowing hand. Booklet is titled Haslemere Educational Museum EXAMINATION PAPERS.

The current status of bryophyte recording in Sussex. 133 000 records. Few areas are now totally unrecorded, but there is still a fair bit of work to do. The earliest records date from about 1700, but most are from the late 1980s onwards 1/2 @bbsbryology.bsky.social @sussexwildlife.bsky.social
A map of the county of Sussex in the south of England, showing the number of different species of bryophytes recorded in each tetrad (2 by 2 kilometre square). There are a few totally unrecorded on the south-western coastal areas, in parts of mid-Sussex, and in the far east of the county. Those areas are also generally under-recorded and need more work. On the coastal areas and in the low Weald, a well-recorded tetrad may have just 40 to 50 different species, but up in the high Weald, 80 or more is more normal. Some tetrads in that area (and on the north slope of the South Downs) may have 130 or more different species
