I recently saw an amazing Navajo rug at the National Gallery of Art. It looks abstract at first, but it is a detailed representation of the Intel Pentium processor. Called "Replica of a Chip", it was created in 1994 by Marilou Schultz, a Navajo/Diné weaver and math teacher. 1/n

A Navajo rug with a complex pattern with muted reds, pinks and blues. The pattern consists of various vertical and horizontal rectangles with stripes. Around the border are small alternating black and colored rectangles. The weaving is mounted in a wooden frame and hanging on the museum wall.

That's actually the opening to the mantle cavity. Their mantle isn't their head but their torso. Cephalopods don't have the head-torso-limb body plan like we do. Instead, they have the torso-head-limb body plan. See these horrifying but educational drawings by @dannastaaf.bsky.social

For me, the most incredible artefacts from the ancient world are the letters people wrote on clay tablets and sent to one another over thousands of years in Mesopotamia, going back to more than 5,000 years ago. They contain recognisable humanity, warmth and humour. Here's a thread of my favourites.

An addendum: another reason I dislike the word "content" is it turns art into something *pushed* on you rather than something you *seek out.* Acclaimed animator Don Hertzfeldt sums it up better than I can:

Not to sound like a curmudgeon, but when I was a teenager, I took the train to go to the record store to find rare stuff. Spotify is way more convenient, but that wasn’t the point. The point was to get out and to feel like you’re hunting, to feel like you’re living your life. I’m going to the movies, I’m going to this show. What streaming has done—it’s very convenient, but it’s taken the feeling of going hunting and turned it into we’re all just being fed. We’re all farm animals that are just being fed, and we’re being fed content. You can just stay home. Just stay home. We’ll just feed it to you. No wonder everyone’s depressed.

one thing I tell my team often is people insisting they want a “realistic” story are rarely seeking that at all — the complaint often means we missed the mark on making the surrounding fiction BELIEVABLE, which is different (tl;dr Tieflings are not real, but they can be believable - see chart)
