This biography is for children, yes, but I wrote the book that I, an adult, wanted to read, so it's really for everyone: lernerbooks.com/shop/show/21... Jeanne's birthday is a great day to celebrate going for very long walks, defying expectations, building wacky contraptions, and OCTOPUSES!

The Lady and the Octopus: How Jeanne Villepreux-Power Invented Aquariums and Revolutionized Marine Biology
Born in a small village in eighteenth-century France, Jeanne Villepreux wasn’t expected to transform marine science. Curious, creative, and clever, Jeanne ventured to Paris by foot as a teenager.

Happy birthday, Jeanne Villepreux-Power! This octopus scientist and aquarium inventor was born #OTD September 25th, 1794! However, many lovely tributes were posted yesterday, because her birthday has often been erroneously published as September 24th. Why? Let's geek out about calendars...
A grayscale digital drawing of Jeanne Villepreux-Power, slightly more than a bust--head, shoulders, crossed arms. She is smiling contentedly and perhaps a little smugly. In a stylized circle around her are all the animals she studied: snail, marten, butterfly, turtle, sea star, and of course the octopuses--common octopus and argonaut, both male and female. It was drawn by me (Danna Staaf).

French marine biologist Jeanne Villepreux-Power invented the first glass aquarium for scientific study in 1832. Her sealed tanks (with aeration & water stability) enabled live observation of sea creatures, which was revolutionary in marine research. She was born #OTD in 1794. #WomenInSTEM
Sepia-toned 1861 photograph by André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri of Jeanne Villepreux-Power (1794–1871), pioneering French marine biologist and inventor of the glass aquarium. She stands in three-quarter profile facing left, leaning elegantly on a tall decorative pedestal vase adorned with flowers. She wears a formal Victorian gown with a fitted bodice of intricate black lace over dark fabric, long lace sleeves, and a voluminous hoop-skirted skirt. Her dark hair is styled in a low chignon, and she gazes thoughtfully to the side in a studio setting with a neutral backdrop.

In honor of Magnapinna showing up in my metaphorical backyard, this month's newsletter includes a collage of all my elbow squid art! Plus octopuses as pest control and the octopus movie's Emmy win: buttondown.com/dannastaaf/a...
A digital collage of drawings of Magnapinna.
The top half is four color drawings that pair the same blue Magnapinna against each of four different cephalopods: Grimalditeuthis (blue), Pygmy Squid (red), Brachioteuthis (yellow), and Reef Squid (green).
The bottom half is a simple black-outlined Magnapinna with unusually long horizontal parts of its arms, so the elbows bend to make corners that can create a nice large frame for another image. The other image framed in the arms is a simple sketch of myself holding my arms out to the sides, bent at the elbows with forearms hanging down and the words "U know, Magnapinna."
On the right side of the collage is a small pink Magnapinna, its body in the upper right and its arms trailing down to flow along the bottom of the page.

Wow, I love all this interest in little-known life cycles! Yay! I'm still researching Mazdas to figure out which sex carries the young (send refs if you have them!), but in the meantime please enjoy my previous study on airplane reproduction
A pencil drawing of an airplane flying low over power lines. The plane's position is similar to a bird laying an egg: bent at the lower back, abdomen lowered, cloaca stretched open as a round egg emerges. Its visible eye is squeezed shut in effort. The egg is about to be deposited on the power line, which already holds two round eggs that look exactly like the visibility markers you may have seen on power lines before.A pencil drawing of airplane eggs hatching on power lines. In the foreground, four balls are attached to a line. The first is a closed sphere with a faint outline of a baby plane inside. The second is torn open, with a baby plane emerging. The third is hanging empty, with the freshly hatched airplane perched on it. The fourth appears to be unfertilized, with three hatchling airplanes all around it, taking bites. (Biologists call this a nurse egg.) In the background, a distant set of eggs can be seen on another set of power lines.Pencil sketch, as from a naturalist's sketchbook, depicting four possible types of airplane fertilization. In the upper left, two planes in flight are connected by a bumpy tube which is labeled "intromittent organ." (This drawing looks very similar to in-flight fueling.) In the upper right, two jets fly in close formation, belly to belly. Where their lower parts touch is labeled "cloacal kiss." Both of these upper drawings are labelel "aerial internal fertilization."
In the lower left, two large passenger jets mate on the ground, one mounting the other from behind. No genitalia are visible. The drawing is labeled "terrestrial internal fertilization."
In the lower right, a light aircraft flies low over power lines with airplane eggs already deposited on them. From the abdominal region of the aircraft comes a cloud. This is labeled "external fertilization 'dusting'".

Kisslip Cuttlefish (Acanthosepion lycidas) get their name from markings on their mantles that resemble lips. It's nice to have a sensible cephalopod name after stuff like the seven-arm octopus that has eight arms or vampire squids that are not squids. 🦑📷 Spike (www.inaturalist.ca/observations...)
Four Kisslip Cuttlefish (Acanthosepion lycidas) in a what appears to be water tank. The camera angle is from above, giving a good view of their tops. Three of them are partially out of frame, with only one in the centre being entirely visible. They have their arms held together. Three of them are hot pink with dark brown stripes, with many "lip" marks on their mantle where the stripes get white as well as the pink in between, making it look like a pair of lips. The other cuttlefish has the same patter, but they are a lighter pink with grey stripes.

Yesterday at the @lindentree.bsky.social Experiment Extravaganza I got to teach kids about science with fellow author nerds @heyhelenaribeiro.bsky.social, Lindsay Lackey, and @rienealwriter.bsky.social! My topic was colors 🌈 Pigmentation v. iridescence in nature and marker chromatography. So fun!
Photo of the sign I made for the event, created with permanent markers on cardstock. It says "Pigment and Light." The letters of the word "Pigment" are drawn in splotchy brown outlined with orange and pink on a white background. The letters of "Light" are on a filled-in-with-Sharpie black background, with the L as a prism through which a beam of light is shining, creating a rainbow which outlines the letters I-G-H-T. The word "and" is in simple cursive crossing the boundary between the white and black backgrounds. I spent most of yesterday morning on this, including scribbling the black background while sitting on the floor of Goodwill because I had promised to take my daughter thrifting.Photo of me (Danna Staaf) standing smiling behind a table in Linden Tree bookstore. The table has an orange tablecloth, my Pigment and Light sign, several of my books, and all the materials for marker chromatophy laid out. I am wearing a my rainbow shirt of comparative squid sizes. Photo taken by the marvelous Rie Neal.Photo of me sitting behind my table in the bookstore with four children in front of it working on the experiment (they are facing away from the camera and their faces are not visible). We all look quite interested and intense. Photo by the splendid Rie Neal.Photo of ten overlapping colorful coffee filters, the results of a chromatography experiment. A black, brown, or gray marker was used to draw a circle on each one, then water was drawn up through the circle and spread out the marker so its component pigments can be seen: blues, pinks, purples, oranges and yellows. Pop culture is full of cephalopod characters, from Squidward to Doc Ock, but how accurate is their anatomy? SS Julian @ssjulian (Octopolis), Danna Staaf, Ph.D. @dannajoystaaf (Monarchs of the Sea, The Lady and the Octopus), and Kassandra Cruz @xjosuecruz (Puppy Knights) share the art of drawing octopods. The panel explores why cephalopods fascinate us, how to combine true anatomy with engaging character design, and practical techniques for committing these elusive invertebrates to ink while avoiding the abyss of artificially hallucinated reference material. Drawing supplies will be provided, but attendees may also bring their own.

Spending time with the musicians in my family created the concept of a lactating piano, which of course I had to illustrate #cursedbiology #inanimateanatomy
An illustrated PSA about piano care. At the top in bright green letters: "SOUR NOTES?" Then, "Don't ignore the warning signs of mastitis!" Dissonant musical notes dance around the words. A very uncomfortable-looking piano with a large swollen udder squats painfully under the words. Below that, the words "Regular milking keeps your piano healthy and the music sweet!" Then there is a cheerful-looking piano with a normal udder next to a milking bucket from which flows several bars of Pachelbel's Canon D dur.
