After months of procrastination i finally did the marie kondo thing for a single drawer and i am irrationally angry. This didn't fit before and there's space now? I can see everything? anyway this is my personality now

as a girl with a PhD in natural language processing and machine learning it's actually offensive to me when you say "we don't know how LLMs work so they might be conscious" I didn't spend 10 years in mines of academia to be told ignorance is morally equal knowledge. We know exactly how LLMs work.

Two years into a genocide and people are still asking others to condemn Hamas, demanding to know whether Israel as a right to exist, and denying the war crimes we've been watching as they livestream them.

If by now you question whether it's a genocide at all, you don't deserve to be a part of the conversation anymore.

there was so little pornography in the 60s that a bikini from a james bond movie became so famous that it has its own wikipedia page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_b...

stewart lee did a great article about understanding german humour and how heavily biased it is towards absurdism. "did you hear about the man with an orange for a head" is by far the best success I've ever had with a joke in germany

university taught me how to interact with other people as an adult human being first and foremost, and gave me a scroll more or less as an afterthought. my first industry job they didn't even care what my degree was, just that "degree" meant "smort" and that would do for entry level sysadmin

oh yeah lol, I moved to comp sci from electrical engineering because logic diagrams were a piece of piss next to the seemingly endless advanced trigonometry one needs for anything involving physical components

this is like taking a medical degree in Jena in the early 17th century, when mankind had just about worked out that bones needed to be fitted in a specific orientation

"everyone is self taught" is like no shit, linux was *seven years old* when I started my degree. comp sci is absolutely wild, my total industry exposure to javascript is being taught the <layer> HTML tag in a single module in third year

addendum to this: breeder contracts can specify that the buyer agrees to neuter the animal before puberty. just checking if neutered animals typically have lots of offspring

guy got mad at me for sharing this comic on twitter back in 2017, but it's still one of my favorite exchanges. (he was not kidding, btw.)
my own tweet explaining "so in this Spanish horror comic, Frankenstein's monster knocks out a woman, and I was REALLY worried, but he just wanted to try on her clothes" with screenshot of a guy named Ziv quote-tweeting me to say "This is horrendously disturbing. I am disturbed. Honestly, Priscilla, you need to back up and look at your life and think to yourself, 'Self, is this really the person I want to be?' Posting frankensteinian erotica and shit?'" with my reply "this is exactly the person I want to be" and the followup "actually it's Frankenstein's MONSTER'S Erotica"

We get these stunning images of the Black Panthers, but I was an adult before I learned about the free breakfast program. Or that the Young Lords were out there picking up trash and taking over Lincoln Hospital to push for better care and services.

I also think part of the problem is we're taught the telegenic shit but not how it's in service to larger political or economic gains. Like we don't really talk about how the Montgomery Bus Boycott was specifically about forcing the bus company to choose btwn integration or bankruptcy

I'm not talking about US politicians I'm talking about normal people. I see people fighting back and organizing every fucking day. ICE hasn't met their recruitment goals. They haven't met their kidnapping goals. That's WHY they keep escalating.

I think there's important context here in that in the 1980s there was a popular film franchise which introduced the entire concept of australia, and australians, to a hitherto completely unaware international audience

the average person has no more of an encyclopedic understanding of the world than they did 30 years ago. it's just easier to find things out. still, you need to be curious enough about a subject. the world shrinking paradoxically makes a lot of stuff less novel, and hence less interesting

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy: www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."
