Setting aside that Trump's $5K check is not real, the total cost would be about on par with Elon Musk's fortune. Whatever anyone says about a midterm bribery check being fiscally irresponsible, it's nowhere near as irresponsible as letting one man hoard the equivalent of all those checks to himself.

The business model of spam fundraising depends on hooking a group of elderly donors who give at a disturbing frequency, summing to sizable amounts. Most of them don't appear especially wealthy. I've compiled a handful of these cases. There are thousands of cases like these in the FEC data. 🧵
A data graphic detailing recurring political donations by a 79-year-old Kansas resident charged 45,331 times since 2018 for a total of $153,856. The top timeline chart shows daily donation frequency from November 2019 through December 2020, highlighting a sharp increase leading up to the 2020 election that peaked at 352 charges in a single day. The bottom horizontal bar chart lists the top 12 recipient committees out of 485 total—led by the Congressional Black Caucus PAC ($7,521 across 2,250 charges), NDTC, and Stop Republicans—noting that the 10 largest recipients represent only 24% of all contributions, with the remainder dispersed across hundreds of PACs, party committees, and candidates.

One reason vote-by-mail remains under attack by Republicans is because of who it helps turn out.
Two New York Times charts on Colorado's all-mail voting, from research by Adam Bonica, Jacob Grumbach, Charlotte Hill, and Hakeem Jefferson.

Top chart, "Which Coloradans benefited most from all-mail voting," shows the difference between actual and projected turnout in Colorado's 2018 election. By race: African-American voters gained about 11 percentage points, Asian about 9, Latino about 8, white about 7.5. By education: less than a high school diploma about 10 points, high school diploma, some college, and bachelor's degree about 9 each, graduate degree about 7. By household wealth: $0 to $5k gained about 11 points, with gains shrinking as wealth rises to about 6 points for households over $500k.

Bottom chart, "Mailing every Coloradan a ballot increased voting across all age groups," plots actual 2018 turnout against projected turnout without all-mail voting, by age from under 30 to 90. Actual turnout is higher at every age. The gap is widest for the youngest voters, roughly 14 points near age 30, and narrows to about 5 points for voters in their 70s and 80s. Generations labeled Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, Silent Generation.

🗣️ Published today in @aeajournals.bsky.social. Ethan Lewis and I use a visa lottery, as a nationwide randomized experiment, to test the effects of foreign labor on US firms and workers. doi.org/10.1257/app.... A concise summary from @nber.org —> www.nber.org/digest/20221...
Abstract:
US firms hiring foreign workers in low-skill nonfarm jobs face a binding quota on the "H-2B" visa, allocated in part through a randomized lottery. We evaluate the quota's marginal impact using the lottery, a novel firm survey, and a pre-analysis plan. Firms exogenously employing more H-2B workers in low-skill jobs increase production (elasticity 0.20–0.22), investment (1.5–2.1), and profits (0.15). The elasticity of substitution between H-2B and US workers is very low (0.8–2.2). Thus, the effect on US employment is zero or positive overall, and positive in rural areas. Forensic analysis suggests similarly low substitutability of black-market labor.

In January, our administration inherited a $12 billion budget deficit — a fiscal crisis greater than the Great Recession.

Today I am proud to announce that our balanced budget has cleared the final step and passed the New York City Council.

We balanced the budget by taxing the rich and making government more efficient. We did not balance this budget on the backs of working people, and we never will.

Every year that follows will build on these principles: Honest budgeting. Fiscal discipline. Transparent government. And an unwavering belief that working people deserve a government that delivers for them every day.

Why Nigeria's smallholders remain stuck: Seeds, credit, and missing data
Despite contributing nearly a quarter of GDP and employing half the workforce, Nigeria's agricultural sector is trapped in low productivity by mutually reinforcing barriers: dysfunctional seed systems, credit market exclusion, absent farmer registries, and federal–state coordination failures. Closing these gaps requires not piecemeal programmes but systemic investment in identification infrastructure, pluralistic seed supply, and risk-sharing mechanisms capable of reaching the most constrained smallholders.
