Locking people up for using drugs will never make sense to me. The people I've known who've used drugs, in spite of the threat of severe consequences, did so bc they are not/were not okay. Locking people in dungeons traumatizes them further and makes these patterns even harder to break.

Look everybody has an opinion on Chicago but not only do I actually live here but I also am probably in the 1% of people who can name their alder, state rep and state senator so you can take my take with that grain of salt. I think there’s a lot happening here that’s shaping perceptions and outcomes

I read today in an article in The Daily Beast that some military leaders have privately begun referring to Pete Hegseth with the nickname "No Tab Pete" and I nearly spit my drink out. I then realized that everyone should have the knowledge to appreciate this ruthless nickname. (thread)

We have had this conversation so many times. You do not have to platform/debate obscene views that are also false. I wrote during a wave of pressure on progressives to compromise with far-right haters:
I can comprehend, and do, that lots of people don’t believe climate change is real, but is there some great benefit in me listening, again, to those who refuse to listen to the global community of scientists and see the evidence before our eyes? A lot of why the right doesn’t “understand” climate change is that climate change tells us everything is connected, everything we do has far-reaching repercussions, and we’re responsible for the whole, a message at odds with their idealization of a version of freedom that smells a lot like disconnection and irresponsibility. But also climate denial is the result of fossil fuel companies and the politicians they bought spreading propaganda and lies for profit, and I understand that better than the people who believe it. If half of us believe the earth is flat, we do not make peace by settling on it being halfway between round and flat.

I am going to say something that is going to sound crazy at first: one sign of how little Gavin Newsom cares about doing the right thing, as opposed to doing the things he needs to do for a doomed presidential race, is how he has handled the Manson Family. Let me explain.

Thomas Paine is my favorite founding father. He was famously abolitionist and one of the earliest voices to point out the hypocrisy of fighting for independence while keeping slaves. He also firmly believed that keeping any friendship which required compromising your morals made you a bad person.

This NYT article focuses on the theatrics of a judge tossing a DOJ official from his courtroom for speaking without permission, but the transcript reveals much worse govt wrongdoing: DOJ cut a plea deal w/ a child sex abuse material (CSAM) defendant before the FBI finished searching his devices ...
Let ' s talk about the Victim ' s rights , because it seems

3 The plea agreement that you executed in this case is

MR. ROSENBLUM: I do agree with that .
THE COURT: It ' s less than a third of the advisory
MR. ROSENBLUM: I think that is fair , yes .
THE COURT: Fair? Look at it . Do you want to see

MR. ROSENBLUM: I agree with Your Honor .
THE COURT: Okay . You ' re championing the victim ' s

15 Let ' s look at why the plea agreement is so deficient .
16 It ' s because you didn ' t have all the evidence in your
7

18 fair to say?

MR. ROSENBLUM: That is correct , yes .
THE COURT: The FBI was still searching the devices

23 babies in this device . There ' s a bunch of prepubescent
24 children committing sexual acts . You saw all that , right?

officialjackwhite This post would basically get anyone, at any job fired immediately...except for arguably the most important position in the world. That's right, trump is a racist, a rapist, a felon, a grifter (currently ordering the US govt. to pay him 10 billion dollars simply because no one will stop him.) and a full on dementia sufferer, and yet he has the power to send in gestapo ICE soldiers to kill our citizens, and so much more dangerously, has the nuclear codes and the ability to end humanity at any moment based on an egotistical whim. How is it possible we've given this evil man so much power? The two
party system, the electoral college, the responsibility that the internet has brought to humanity and its direct conflict with truth, and America's obsession with celebrity, are all to blame, but the fact that we aren't stopping it is..insanity. Arrest this
man. Impeach this man. 25th amendment this man. Indict this
man. Jail this man. This longtime friend of pedophile epstein, who appears 40 thousand times in the files. This demolisher of the White House, demolisher of the Constitution
demolisher of the Bill of Rights, this demolisher of America full stop. It's hard to believe the government does almost nothing about this lunacy and we just all have to sit back and watch as a people. And when he's finally gone? we had better put into place new laws and regulations that don't allow anvone to find dangerous loopholes based solely on the assumption that our President has some sort of dignity and decency. Abolish these loopholes, abolish the electoral college, and if we had any
sense we would abolish the two party system (that George Washington advised us never to have) that got us here in the first place and has failed not only Americans, but everyone
else in the world who is currently suffering from our policies and suffering from the whims of this sick, deranged man who I will state again, has his tiny, bruised fingers on the nuclear launch button.
