I still don't understand why Kotek ran for reelection. She didn't accomplish anything, isn't popular, and isn't a good campaigner. I hope the blue wave and Drazen's awful politics are enough but it's a risky, awful bet

you will encounter more opportunities in life to change the batteries on a smoke alarm than you will to run into a burning building and no one gives a shit you changed those batteries but it is still very important and why are you waiting on a burning building, know what i’m saying, it’s a metaphor

Private schools are a tool for the wealthy to not have to care about public education, the same way that funding schools via property taxes is a way for wealthy neighborhoods to not have to care about school quality on poorer neighborhoods.

We’ve lived through the nearly complete systematic unwinding of the postwar public university, which for all its faults, was premised on the idea that not only aristocrats could be intellectuals, & that having non-aristocratic intellectuals was better for knowledge & therefore better for everyone

eliminating I-5 for a week seems to have caused remarkably minimal disruption to Portland's regional traffic flows. so why again do ODOT, Governor Kotek and the Oregon Legislature think we should spend three billion dollars (!) to literally double the width of lanes on I-5 through North Portland?

I know the money is good and ownership has made it clear they don't care, but it is still a huge bummer that the Thorns' jersey sponsor is the fascist surveillance doorbell. Hard to imagine a pick more out of step with the fanbase short of Palantir or Flock

City Observatory continues to keep up with the "carmageddon" beat - turns out, shutting down I-5 doesn't seem to be having hardly *any* impact on traffic congestion across the region. Why again does the Oregon Legislature want to spend over $3 billion to double the width of the RQ freeway? #orleg

It’s wild that the Portland Police Association suggests officers would be “met with swift and merciless condemnation and punishment” for comments akin to Councilor Green’s 2020 tweets. At a protest this year, Officer Brandon Brunelle said he’d have shot Renee Good. Most officials said nothing.

Wow a man isnt even allowed to be right anymore? "Green repeatedly called for eliminating policing entirely, saying at one point “cops are simply incompatible with peaceful society.” At other times, he referred to police officers as “absolute monsters,” “bastards” and “infamously cowardly.”"

Went to a potluck at my friend's that was almost all teens somehow. I was mildly shocked when I walked in and the room was ~twenty years younger than I expected, but then they asked if I was famous, were wowed by my panzanella, and told me I look like Tom Lehrer so clearly the kids are all right

reading up on trimet payroll tax history. some things never change
The payroll tax was first put into effect a year ago shortly after Tr-Met took over the old Rose City Transit Co. From its inception, it has stirred a controversy, mainly involving businessmen from outlying suburban areas.

I have spent so much of my life reading through city documents where they cut corners for the fossil fuel industry and then made public statements about how they only run a fair process. I have written hundreds of pages of analysis showing how the City rigs the game and refuses to regulate.

You literally can't trust what these people say. They will say whatever they can to get council to give approval for what they want (which is whatever business or industry want) and then they will commit the City to something without authority.

Kanal read the transcript into the record where council received assurances that the budget note would not result in privatization and then they found out the Mayor entered into a contract to privatize it. This kind of repeated bullshit is why I am so dogged about Zenith / I Squared Capital.

There's a big discussion about funding a performing arts center at PSU today and Kanal is bringing up how Councilors were told that moving a budget note about the Portland Tennis Center would not commit Council to privatization and then the Mayor went and privatized the tennis center anyway.

to place the sexual and reproductive exploitation of black women at the center of your understanding of american slavery is to see that the system was forced birth and this, in turn, should lead to a more expansive vision of what the 13th amendment actually guarantees.

yeah this is a separate conversation but one of the things that hasn’t quite bubbled up from scholarship into mainstream thinking is that american slavery was a system centered principally on reproduction. forced birth for capital accumulation is what it was

Some Portlanders seem to think Angelita Morillo is a demon but if everyone on that council fought for Portland the way she does we’d live in a Utopia. The amount of heart & drive that she has is unreal. Part of why we can’t have nice things is that too many people don’t recognize a champion.
